Staircase Lane in Allesley must be one of the oldest and most attractive tree lined lanes in the city. I have a couple of postcards of the lane dating from the early 1900s. Does anyone else have any old postcards or photos of Staircase Lane?

Hello Mr Bean Smile and as no one else has done it "Welcome to the forum" I remember Staircase Lane very well. My son frequently fished a small pond down there. It even held small pike, dont know if its still there. It was a very pleasant walk down there until the Jag' relief road was built. Then the Jag factory was closed. Anyway Mr Bean have a good time on the forum but ( Whisper ) beware of the moderators.

It was a nice walk to the Nugget, I seem to remember you could also walk across the fields, past the big house which became a comprehensive school and you ended up at the Bablake playing fields in Norman Place Rd

I gave, some years ago, a photo album of this area dated 1920s and 30s to the people who were trying to save the Coundon Wedge.

Does anyone happen to know if there was a farm out this way belonging to the Charley family? They were butchers in Harnall Lane in the 1950s.

Hi Coventry 49 I believe the Charley family had a farm in Butt Lane, I think they sold horse equipment, saddles etc.

Hi again Coventry 49 I have just done a search on the internet. They trade as Townfields Saddlers Limited in Butt Lane, the managing director is Adrian Charley, their telephone number is 024 7640 2474. Hope this is some help to you.

At the top of Staircase Lane there is a deep disused sandstone quarry. It is understood that the stone from this quarry was used to rebuild Allesley Church. The farm adjacent to the quarry is called Church Farm. The quarry is shown in active use on maps dated 1824 and 1888. The quarry is now overgrown with mature trees and has become a haven for wildlife. Does anyone have additional information about the quarry?

There is such a wealth of historic sites dotted along Staircase Lane in Allesley. I think the Allesley Conservation Area should be extended to include these valuable sites. There is a timber-framed barn with brick infill at Church Farm, Staircase Lane, that is believed to date between 1701 and 1750. It is a locally listed building, but is slowly crumbling away.

Is it not the responsibility of the owners to maintain listed buildings? As for the quarry that you mention I think that I know where that is. Does Pickford Brook run through it?

Remember my first outing with a fishing rod was in a pit somewhere down there, later in life I am just glad that trees can't talk. Wink
