Yes Peter B, though I am appalled to see how little remains now. When I was at school in Junior Tech in the early 50s there was much more that could have been saved! |

My memories are those of Prof. What struck me about the image is that the old bridge appears to be either one way traffic or traffic free, another shock to the memory but understandable in today's traffic. |

Argon,
The old bridge is one way - towards the city centre. It has been as long as I've known it (late 80's). I presume it was changed when Butts Road & the Ring Road were built as the Ring Road cut Spon Street in two, but I'm only guessing.
Peter.

My mum was born in Moat Street and her mother's family name was Duckett - my mum was Worrall. Grandad was Alec Worrall, he married Stella Duckett and they had my mum Julia and her brother Jim. She is in the early stages of vascular dementia and I am trying to put together a memory book for her - short term memory useless! Long term memory she does really well. Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Jacqueline.
The old city is my thing but there are hopefully others who can help. In the mean time there are lots of scraps of information and images dotted about other topics. Type Moat Street into the search in posts above for some info. With a quick look I can't see any direct images of Moat Street (just junctions) but there are a lot of Albion Street and Thomas Street in the library pictures (see blue button on the left). Once you've familiarised yourself with the map (page 2 of the moat street search) then you could look at Britain From Above for an overview of the street. I think that the one below is probably the best. Log in to be able to zoom in.
Moat Street bottom right area
Hope this helps

Thanks to Jane Garner on FB - her great grandparents William & Alice Blakemore bought 99 Spon End for their shop, 1907. The property is still there today!

Dutchman mentioned the Cruet Cafe a while ago on this thread. Don't think we've had a decent image of it. Thanks to Dean Nelson.

Apparently those Spon End shops were my very first outing with my mum, in 1965, when I was about a week old, so they probably wouldn't have looked very different to that super photo! |

Some of the Herbert pictures show it draped with ivy and in various stages of repair. I'm not sure about how many times it was restored. The poor place has literally been through the wars. Great photo. |

Cov Archives keeps giving. The Prince of Wales pub on the corner of Moat Street and Thomas Street with parts of York Street and Hertford Place in the distance. This would've been taken from the newly built Givens House.
