Hi Slim, I vaguely remember Sheila's Kitchen when we first moved to Cheylesmore but can't place it. I've found an article which suggests it may have become the Sonargaon, which is still there, but it seems like a different owner, unless it was sold to them as a going concern. |

Can't say for certain, and don't know what number it was, but where the Sonargaon stands is about the right place. |

NormK, someone may know one of the four sisters by their first names, Doris, Freda, and twins Irene & Lilian Cottom, now aged 77/75/73. It would be nice if someone knew her, as she went to both of the Cheylesmore schools till 1955. She has lived up here in Wigan with me for the past 56 years. |

Dougie, ask her if she remembers Roxanne, Lorraine, Linda and Sheila, the last two are more of her time. Milly rules

I don't know the age of anyone posting about the Daventry Road and Cheylesmore but my wife lived there in the 40/50s, she has asked again if anyone remembers the playing area between the shops that they called the bumps, before they built the shops in the middle. If so and you played there anyone remember the Cottom's girls
Daventry Road's quite a long road, and divided in two by the shopping parade and Quinton Pool. Which part of Daventry Road did your wife come from? |

Sorry she didn't live on Daventry Road but in the houses at the back of the shops she lived at 13 Cornelius Street, most of the children played on the waste land between the shops (called the Bumps) and across the road in the park that's if you could call it a park even in the 60s,
Thank's for the names NormK but the wife can't remember any of them but it is along time ago they most have gone to the same schools |

Morning Dougie,
Those 'bumps', are they of any significance? Like underground ruins, you never know, although I should think they would have been excavated by now. Just curious, bumps could hide a multitude of ???????? |

It was nice to switch on the computer this morning and the first thing I saw was "Morning Dougie" from the other side of the world you've made my day thanks and good morning to you Dreamtime
I don't know anything about the waste land that was between the shops before they built the new shops on it, it's the wife just going back in time to the fifteen years she lived and played at the Cheylesmore,
Dreamtime you may think that you were the best girl to come out of Coventry sorry but I got the best in 1960 and I've been taking her back ever since. |

Evening here now Dougie,
My heart and soul are still in Coventry, but my 'soulmate' is no longer with me. What is it they say, 'You can take the girl out of Coventry, but not Coventry out of the girl'. How true that is. I hope you will be sending us some pictures of the town lights then come Christmas. Crikey, not long now. |

They've now finished demolishing the old sheltered accommodation block so I took the photo from where it used to stand. It gives a new and more open view of Quinton Park
The brown area at the front has been seeded with grass so presumably there are no immediate plans to build on it. |

It's lovely to see this old pool on the forum, my mother lived the last 15 yrs of her life in a flat overlooking the area, she loved it, watching the view change as the seasons moved round, she particularly loved seeing the crocus bloom each year, watching the swans, ducks and hundreds of Canada geese mug anyone approaching the water, at one time there was an elderly lady who must have spent pounds a day feeding them, as soon as she appeared with her bags of bread, birds of all types surrounded her, I have to admit, it was a bit of an obstacle course walking around the pool, and very slippy after rain, but so many people got so much pleasure watching changes grow up. It's a pity they took the loos down, but it seems to be happening everywhere, believe it or not a local block has been sold to be rebuilt as housing, should make for some interesting house names. |

Sadly, we've lost a two of the swans over the past couple of weeks but the remainder seem to be thriving and actually look bigger than their parents.
A heron has also been visiting early morning but I've yet to get a photograph of it. Fortunately as the pool is fairly deep it is restricted to the shallows so can't deplete the fish stocks by much. |

Many thanks 'Old Lincolnian' for the lovely photos of Quinton Pool. I used to live in Cheylesmore but now am in Devon and will probably never see the pool again. Please can you take more! |
