The interesting thing for me is that the pubs and the Canley Club came before the churches and Canley was once described by a Bishop (or someone similar) as a 'godless' estate with many lost souls drifting aimlessly.....
Hi Ruth, I can confirm that it was "Charter Gospel Hall, Canley" as I have just dug out the bible I was given for attendance in 1959, signed by T Foster (superintendent) and H Hollingsworth (teacher).

At Henry Parkes school, there was a girl called Daphne Bramble who was a little older than me. What a footballer she was. Anyone remember her?

I don't remember any other shop of the same kind, so it must have been there after 1959. I also remember the Dolphin pub. As kids we used to climb over the fence into the bottle store, take empty bottles, and take them to the off licence dept and claim the penny deposit. Not very honest, but kids would be kids.
2 Freeburn Causeway... you must have been almost opposite the Dolphin which you describe. The hut was still there when I moved into 5 Templars Fields across the road from the brook. You must have lived near my soccer-mad friend Al Broderick in Freeburn. Did you know him? Don't recall what happened to him after we left school. Bill Rumball

Hi Bill and welcome to our friendly Forum Wave Your post above responds to one from 2013 Oh my and in fact the poster has not visited the Forum for over five years.... so I'm doubtful they will see yours. If you go back to their post, you'll find that there's a contact button for them - whether they've changed their email address since then, I don't know - but you might like to try and get in touch with the poster that way. Be careful, though, bearing in mind we've not heard from them for so long. Good luck Thumbs up

Any idea when Walsall Street was built. I recall the post war single storey prefabs in Wendiburgh Street so I would hazard a guess at late 40s early 50s. What happened to the scout hut (73rd Coventry) at the bottom of Mitchell Avenue?

Our back garden on Charter Avenue backed onto the back gardens at the top of the horseshoe of Walsall Street. We moved in 1953 and I cannot remember any building going on, so I guess it was during the late 40's. All of the prefabs have now gone and are housing. I remember the single storey buildings in Mayors Croft, where the concrete stairs stopped at the roof, they have finally finished them off now and they all have roofs. The council set up some allotments at the bottom of Mitchell Ave in about 71/72 and I think they took over the hut as a storeroom.

It's quite possible our two gardens backed onto each other Mick as we lived at 55 Walsall Street. We were the neighbours from Hell, always shouting and being noisy, laser shows and disco parties galore, we were ahead of the time in 1956!! Wave Big grin

Did either of your neighbours have a son called Graham? Their garden was exactly opposite ours. Looking on Google Maps, our house backed onto number 59

Walsall Street was being built in 1939 or a bit earlier. Due to the war and lack of materials not all two storey houses were completed, thus the single storey ones. We moved into #46 early fifties. My parents lived there until moving to Ohio in 1972.

I seem to recall Mr Rea was still riding the same bike that he used during the blitz, and was damaged by fire from his shed which some vandals started. Does anyone know any more on this?
My late father's bike is in the museum of Transport Coventry. I gave it to them when he died..... From Michael Rea, The Zero Carbon House, Unst, Shetland.

What memories that picture gave me. Les Rea, a great teacher and a great man. He taught me in my last year at Henry Parkes in 1961, coached me in football and took the team on to win the junior schools shield, we also won at rounders that year. I remember, he also collected car number plates, and would show me how he collated them.

Anyone remember the wooden dining huts at Henry Parkes? Coloured aluminum beakers with about half an inch of water in them. Tapioca pudding?

I attended Sir Henry Parkes in the mid-fifties and was taught by Mr Rea, then on to Woodlands. Came to Ontario in 1967.
