Photo poser - Jack Frost and his steam roller

Good find! I was looking at Old Maps this morning and noticed "Coventry Corporation Waterworks" close to the arches, and wondered . . .

I have looked long and hard at this, and have come to the outcome that it's not Spon End arches. These are a lot taller than the pics. And have higher walls next to the track. Coton arches in Nuneaton are smaller in size (height wise) unless the road surface has been raised since the pic was taken. The name hite (White) on the roof may have been as said of White and Poppe factory, but cannot be sure. It may be near Nauls Mill Park, but cannot be sure of that either. Does the line cross an arched bridge there? There are many bridges around Coventry that are now made of steel. It could be one of them that was re-built after the war? (Don't you just love these problem pics)

There are arched bridges at Nauls Mill Park. We used to walk there from Poole Road. When I was about 11 my friend and I were walking under the bridge, some lads were throwing stones off the railway bridge and one hit me on the head and cut my head open. I don't remember any factories there though. I found that White and Poppe had a factory for a while in Exhall but I think that was during the Second World War. Just remembered, some of the arches at Nauls Mill had doors on, when we were kids the council used the arches to store the roller skates and stilts etc we could hire out in the school holidays, this would be in the 1950s.

This pic was taken at Coundon Rd / Meriden St. These look like the same houses on Go#gle Ea#th.

I was looking in the newspaper archives last night and reading about the City Engineer's Steam Rollers. I found a mention of Coundon Road Coal Wharf. Don't know whether that gets us any further! The original 'poser' does appear to be next to a stack of coal in a yard, as someone said, it's not fired up. Coundon Road Sidings with 'Stacking Plots'

Hi Foxcote, The coal wharf was there until quite recently, although the sidings had long gone. The new houses with railway name streets were built along side one remaining trader, who stayed until the end. That whole area including the old rugby ground is now transformed.

Morning Philip, that first photo of the station was brilliant I thought, it's even got a bus on! Where are the other Coal Wharves, the Steam Roller must surely be at one of them?

Funny, I was thinking about there last night, there used to be a bridge you could go under the railway if the level crossing was closed.

I have used the under bridge many times, one thing you had to be wary of was if it had rained a lot it would flood. I have seen a few cars come to grief under there, Minis with their distributor at the front were more vulnerable than most. It was a good alternative if the crossing barrier was closed...

There was another Wharf by Sandy Lane Bridge. I remember if you were allocated a railway wagon, we could tip the whole load of scrap metal straight into the wagon from the elevated siding

Hi all & thank you. I love this. The under-pass is still there, I walked through it last Tuesday. The wharf or sidings were on the opposite side from the photo, looking townwards.

Hi Norm. I remember that too. That became an access for the dumping of rubbish onto the railway, until high fencing was installed.

Hi again Whilst at Coundon last Tuesday, I had an evening meal at the Coundon pub. The pub is a Sizzler, & whilst no one would describe it as a Claridges, the Coundon & the ones that I have been in for a mid-day lunch have all been good & good value. On my out & about thread, travelling by bus, I attach importance to the convenience of our pubs at various locations. The Bull at Meriden takes my best vote, not just becase I was treated to my last dinner there but it was fabulous. Back to the under-pass, my neighbour, Joan, who is eighty today, sheltered in the under-pass during an air-raid.
