My father used to own the newsagents at no.20 on the other corner of Moor Street to the Oak. Now Millsy's coffee bar. That was in the late 1940's. I spent many happy hours there. It was the time when the first Biro pens were available but of course when they ran out of ink that was the end of their use and they were expensive. Someone came out with a machine for refilling the pens with ink and my dad bought one. I remember him refilling pens brought in by customers in the room upstairs. You had to push out the ball with a rod from the far end of the pen and they push the end against the nozzle of a tank of pressurized ink. What a messy job, ink everywhere. Not a total success and it was soon abandoned, and of course cheaper ballpoints replaced it. |

I used that newsagent's right up until the 80's (or whenever it was) until it closed and then 'mysteriously' the side wall collapsed and they were able to obtain planning permission to rebuild it as Millsy's. |

Interesting NeilsYard. I did not know that the wall collapsed. It is an old building, to to my recollection structurally sound when we had it. My father also had a newsagents at no.65 Earlsdon Street at the same time, he later sold it to Harry Storer. |

I seem to recall that conversion work to the bar had begun on 'Millsy's' when the building collapsed. I am not surprised as these old terraces are poorly built. |

Yes flap but I'm fairly sure the original works were to plans that did not include the extension to how it appears today. That was only secured once a 'full' rebuild was required post 'collapse.' |

I'm not sure what the problem is, Millsy's looks fine and is a good asset to the area.

No problem flap - it was just the way the planning permission was obtained being highlighted. |

I always thought it was Accommodation - as the big house on the corner of Poplar Road was at one point a hotel - and Consumption for the City Arms! |
