I remember the "outdoor" (off licence) and buying a bottle of Strongbow to share with my friends on a Friday night before heading out for the Locarno. What great days they were, no talk of referendums, the only politics came from "That was the week that was". Magic.

I remember a pork batch shop in Albany Road in the late 60s but it was almost opposite Winifred Avenue near the bridge. We would sometimes use it for lunch as it was near my school. I believe it was called Brookie's but was always known to us as 'The Clinic' because it was spotless with white tiles everywhere. Far better than school dinners! Would the off-licence have been in that same row of shops, opposite the old Astoria cinema? That was called something like 'Underwoods Wines' in the 60s and was operated by the parents of a school friend of mine, the Boycotts. I used to love going there as there was always a seemingly endless supply of pop and crisps for us.

Mister D-Di, yes the off licence was in the same block as the batch shop as I recall. I used both of them on my way home, after work, regularly at that time. My family owned the launderette in Earlsdon Street in the 1960s and I was living in Bulkington so it was on the way home.

Moderator - please put this on whatever topic you feel is most apt. This morning we went into Sidmouth (Devon) to wander round the town and along the seafront watching some of the events of Sidmouth Folk Festival, which is on all this week. After watching various country dancing groups, one group in particular caught our eye. They were absolutely wonderful, very professional with their fabulous costumes, dancing and music. I couldn't believe my eyes when I read 'Earlsdon Morris Coventry' on their big base drum! My sister was with me and she was born in Earlsdon in Warwick Avenue, so we were thrilled to see them. We did manage to speak to one of their group and learn a bit about their history. If you get the chance to see them in action please go along, you won't be disappointed.

I remember it well into the 1980s - it was near Atkins and Barker. Great batches!

Do you mean the Albany Club or the Albany Pub? One is on Earlsdon Street and the other on the corner of Albany Road and Broomfield Road.

The Earlsdon History group on FB have some great images especially of some of the huge houses in the Earlsdon Avenue South / Davenport Road area - many of which have disappeared. I knew of this one but not seen before - The Grange, Davenport Road, 1908. Another in our 'Lost Large Houses of Earlsdon' collection. This one had a relatively short life. Built in 1898 and demolished by 1935 to make way for Pinewood Grove. It was at one time the largest residential property in Coventry and was owned by a member of the Herbert family. Before the First World War it passed to another prominent Coventry engineer by the name of Walter Phillips. During the war Walter had one wing converted into a nursing home for wounded servicemen. Pictured here is the frontage on Davenport Road. All it made me think of was - Colonel Mustard - in the Dining Room - with the Dagger Big grin

It is Earlsdon Street with Moor Street on the left as I remember it. The houses below Moor Street were turned into shops later.
