Re the post I made 388, the name of the fishing tackle shop that turned into the Hillfields Advice Centre, I've rememebered its name, it was Sharps Fishing Tackle, his first name was Albert.
Also I seem to remember a toy shop that was in Berry Street (early to mid 60's) next to the BSM shop, both shops / premises being a couple of doors past Coronation Road going up Berry Street towards Primrose Hill Park.
Happy days, Fruit salads and Blackjacks 4 for 1d, and a Lucky Bag 3d and Beano 3d on a Saturday with my 1 shilling pocket money.

That's three nice topics. Jan's story of Hillfields ;which I have just read again), fish & chips, & faggots & peas. Jan's story is just like a painting which I want to be in somewhere. Whilst still at school, I had a Saturday job at Lilley's greengrocery, in Primrose Hill St. Mr Lilley, along with his son Derek, looked after the business. They had another shop on Foleshill Rd.
Philip you'll like this one then - its only taken 13 years to come up with a photo of them - 23 Primrose Hill St looking at the directories - Thanks to Dean Nelson on FB -

Another thanks to Mark Tattam on the "Coventry we Used to Know" - St Peter's Street looking east towards the junction with Vine Street at the end. You can see St Peter's Tower at the end. All underneath Sidney Stringer Academy today.

My grandparents, the Hastings, lived at 20 Wellington Street until the early 60's and I swear it was a house that had a top shop from when the weavers or other workers spent their days. It was a kind of dormitory for my uncles - 5 of them as I remember. Can anyone tell me if the buildings had 3 floors? |

Hi Linda. Yes. Follow the white Singer factory building north to St Peter's Church. Then follow the line of the church to the right. The first road running at right angles is Canterbury Street and the next one is Wellington Street. Badly damaged by bombing. 20 was on the southern half of the road before the war but it was renumbered after the war and ended up on the northern end on the west side. You can zoom in further with a login at BFA. Number 20 would have been the one with the red dot. Looking at the 1850 map, shows that 18 and 20 and the buildings to the south weren't built at the same time as the row 2-16, to the north. Explaining the changes in style along the street.

Hello,
That is a fabulous picture. We can see the two pubs that featured in my early years post, The Foresters & The Canterbury Arms. Ford St chapel that is thriving. Two of their folk help our chapel out with our youth meeting called the Flock. Wheatly St flour mill, Goodwins is there, in the region of where the Coventry bus garage is now.
Thank you for posting that photo. I hope that our members Pat & Mayjan see it. |

Morning to you Helen,
Another fab picture. Clean & tidy streets. I'm reminded that it was the Singer Cycle manufacturer employees who in 1883, formed what became the City Sky Blues football team.
I can see the "round tower" in Ford St, where ladies were not supposed to enter! I'm just being told that it was called the "Green Man" urinal. |

Thank to all of you - this is just what I needed. My sister insisted that the houses in Wellington Street were all 2 storey but I remember the house well as I spent so much time there with my grandparents when I was enrolled in St. Mary's. |

Hello,
I so look forward to receiving comments from our overseas correspondents. I hope that it brings us all closer together. Correspondents hey!
I don't hear that term so much these days, but it was commonplace in days of wireless. There used to be a programme called "From our own correspondents".
Happy days.
Just thinking about it, there is a current news item about a couple in their twenties living in the forties regime. That would be fun on here, hey!
The radio program "From our own correspondent", started in 1955. I was 7/8 at the time. I had to ask what is a correspondent. It's still running now on Radio 4. |

24 Wellington St was where my elder brother lived when he first got married, I think his local was the Star & Garter, Albert St.Nicholson
