Thanks Annewiggy, that's the stone block I was talking about. Presumably he died in Flanders. The stone certainly looks much older than his death would suggest and it has deteriorated further since the photo was taken. I know we have some very soft sandstone around the village which was used (unadvisedly) for building, so I assume this was the type used. But why stick it in a nondescript wall, presumably fallen into disrepair since insertion? Why wasn't he included in the village memorial?

I passed through the churchyard purposely last week to have a closer look at the 'wall'. It has been built as a memorial, a self contained structure, albeit not very well. At some time, it has been partially repointed, again not very well. The stones are old and presumably reclaimed. It is a little sad that a memorial to someone who died in the war should be stuck on a path side where few people would notice, and those that do, summarily dismiss it, like I did.

Anyone heard of Brown's Heath school for girls, perhaps in Brown's Lane? I recently met a lady who taught there but did not have a good memory of it.

Prof, A quick search of the internet doesn't show a Browns Heath school in Coventry. There was however a Broadheath Girls School which I presume was on Broad Street, Edgwick at or near the current primary school (I don't have a log-in to access the Facebook page). Peter.

I think it likely this was a private school which may not have lasted that long. The former teacher I met in Cheltenham did not stay long or give a good report of it!

Never seen this one before - Allesley Hall entrance (Drive) taken from what would be today's Allesley Old Road. Yes the Lodge is still there. Had not see the gated entrance before from ground level. Thanks to Rich Edward on one of the Coventry FB pages -

That's the Toll House up ahead in the distance, as originally there used to be a fee to go along Holyhead Road.

Yes here's a closer view which includes the Tithe Barn. The photographer is more or less on what is the traffic island today looking south-easterly.

Does anybody know where this was from Robs Library Collection? Cannot find the road on maps? Hollyberry Lane?

Hollyberry End is closer to Meriden than Allesley, Cannot remember Hollyberry Lane by that name but Harvest Hill Lane is close to it. Could it be a name change. During the war my family stayed there for a short time in a bungalow, after being bombed out. Harry Weston lived in part of the bungalow, it belonging to one of his relatives, after being bombed out himself. I believe he found the accommodation for us.
