Thank you for that info and map - a local lady told me that there used to be a house there until the 50's, but I'd not been able to find it one earlier maps - now I know why! Cheers

I think it was a guesthouse of some sort which would have been typical of the area. Prior to that being built most of what people now think of as "Allesley" was just farmland.

Yes, most of the village was at the 'posh' end by the church - my friend can remember our houses being built in the farmland! The village green was the piece of land by the shops, in front of the flats there.

As you come up from the shops towards what I know as the Hollies "where the big house once stood", and across the now A45 to the large farmhouse, "now the Windmill Village Hotel", a distant relative of mine owned it as the farm. When they sold up, they moved to the top of Browns Lane in Hawkesmill Lane. The factory on the A45 just past what I remember as the Sportsmans Arms is where I think the Triumph TR7-8 were built. And as for the names around the area that point out there may have been a windmill somewhere, I cannot find it on any maps. Wave
Always looking forward to looking at the past.

Hi there, Spirit of Coventry. Do you remember or have any info on the Allesley Castle. If so there is a thread on this site. I started it a while back and any info, no matter how small, would be useful. I grew up in the Allesley area and only heard a month or two ago it had a castle. Thumbs up
Always looking forward to looking at the past.

"Guiting House" Whilst on a visit to my 95 year old uncle who was born and bred and still lives in the village I asked him about "Guiting House". The name meant nothing but he remembers the Cluley family living there in the 1920s and 30s. Probably elsewhere on the forum but well known in Coventry for cars and cycles. On the 1911 census they were at Brownshill Green. He also remembers two ladies by the name of Kelly who lived by the large house at the top of Windmill Hill. He delivered newspapers to them. Further memories this morning were about Trinity House in Rectory Lane where the Grindlay family lived (Coventry Motor Sundries). Must sign off, meeting about Ash Green Summer Festival on Saturday at Ash Green School.

"Guiting House" was the home of John Vernon Pugh, engineer and inventor who was to become chairman of Rudge-Whitworth

Thanks for that, just shows you can't rely on a 95 year old memory, 'Cluleys lived there' came out without any prompting. It appears that Guiting House was sold in 1936 after Pugh's death. I've certainly heard him mentioned in family ramblings over the years

Hi Morgana, Hi all Wave A couple of Sundays ago, I boarded the No 7 in town & alighted in Browns Lane, whereupon I walked back towards Coventry following the course of the Sherbourne. After a rest inside the Elms, I continued my walk, finishing up at the home of my son & daughter-in-law in Coundon. Just a nice time to arrive for tea. Wave

Hello Philip, it's a lovely walk, done it myself many times when I lived in Coundon as my son used to live in Allesley Village and my gran and grandad used to live in Browns Lane, and my aunt and uncle. I think you smelt the teapot and you earned a well made cuppa, hope you got biscuits too. The link is of Allesley Village history of Butt Lane too and how the people used it and the Coundon Wedge.
