Hi Kaga, The photo is from a 1955 newspaper article, which featured two views of the Foleshill Road and mentions about the amount of accidents that happened along that road and in particular, mentions the Foleshill Road / Lockhurst Lane junction being what they described as a "BLACK SPOT"! The second photo in the featured article, is taken down by the above mentioned junction and as well as cars dating from the 1930's and 40's being clearly visible, there are also a couple a bit newer (possibly dating from around 1950+ ?), which are a Standard Vanguard and what looks to me very much like an MG Magnette? My previously posted photo here above certainly does look to be a lot older than it actually is, but I'm pretty confident that it was taken in 1955 to go with the published newspaper article!

Could they be the 40's, and the headscarves I thought had gone by '55 and the road looks a bit ragged like the forties too - just looks out of place somehow. Why, I lived just inside Broad Street at that time.
Kaga. The Queen still wears her headscarf, and Princess Anne. Me too if I get caught out in the rain (puddin' cloths as my father used to call them). Ooooops - back to the Foleshill Road.

Dreamtime, I don't think she ever got over what she saw in the Mall on VE Day, much the same as I didn't from living in Broad Street for a few months.

Foleshill Road at the junction of Lockhurst Lane, pictured here back in 1955. (Lots of nice old classic cars visible here too!).

CKV 1D, I wondered why any one should photo the Foleshill Road, couldn't think of anything worthwhile, except the room I had there?

But aren't we glad they did, so that we can see now what we then all took for granted! Thumbs up Same applies today, too

The Redesdale Cinema would be behind the photographer in those photographs - and it's not been demolished, just a change of use Wink

It's fascinating to see photographs of Foleshill Road at the turn of the last century. My great-grandfather Arthur Hopkins moved there from the Black Country sometime between 1902 and 1911. He lived at 1 The Hollows, Foleshill Road and this was still given as his address in 1917 when his son John Thomas Hopkins was killed at Passchendaele. Arthur worked for Coventry Corporation and stayed in Coventry until his death in 1940. By the time of the 1939 register he was living with his daughter in Stratford Street. Does anyone know where "The Hollows" was? I can't find it on any maps, though that may be my old eyes! Would be grateful for any help! I notice also in the photo library, photographs of a Foleshill War Memorial, on which my great-uncle's name would probably have been listed. What happened to this, does anyone know? Perhaps it was a victim of the WWII bombing. Or is it still around somewhere?

Hello rosie55, here's a page from a 1935 directory. It shows The Hollow which comes after numbers 98/100. It's after Harnall Lane West and well before Eagle Street. A bit more information; The Hollow probably in the area by the arrow?

The Redesdale Cinema on Foleshill Road (post #43) was built on the tennis court in front of the GFS building - I have this postcard: I picked up this citation a few years ago: The GFS building [grandfather, father, son] was in Edmund Road with a tennis court and well-kept gardens sloping down to Foleshill Road. It was a very impressive building which housed teachers and other professionals. There was an annexe used for all types of functions, and it was here that the 3rd Coventry Girl Guides held their meetings. The Redesdale Cinema was built on the tennis court when Bassett Green acquired the land, but the building still remained and was eventually let out as flats The building can clearly be seen towards the top of this 'Britain From Above' image from 1929

Leicester Street in 1932. And the rear of the same buildings which were due to be demolished. The building was originally stables but were converted to dwellings as they were not considered good enough for horses !Sorry about the quality. Some of the newspaper pictures are very poor.

Correct me if I am wrong but in the 1960's was it called the O'Brien building? If it was, for a time, I worked there when Repanco, the offshoot of R.E.P., had part of it.
