Does anyone have any information - directories, electoral rolls, etc. on the occupants of 89 The Butts and of 1 Sovereign Terrace between 1932 and 1937? Together with some family members I'm trying to piece together my grandfather's marital history. Thank you very much. |

Hi, there was no 89 Butts in the years you mention.
But for Sovereign Terrace, see below for 1935 & 1937.

In 1906 there were another 3 buildings beyond number 85 but by 1913 they'd gone because the road was widened.

Thank you so much, Heathite and Helen. I'm still a little confused because the 1912 Spennell's Directory states that Court 9, Butts is behind 89 Butts but the numbering on maps I've seen doesn't show number 89 as the dwelling in front of that court. Am I right in thinking that some or all of the Butts courts were demolished to make way for the Technical College? I have done my head in reading all the posts in this thread!
Is it possible to locate any Arthur Taylors in the directories between 1932 and 1937, assuming these directories, like the 1912, have people listed in alphabetical order as well as by street? If I'm asking too much, please say so.
Thank you both again |

Hi Primrose, here is an image from the 1937 directory.
More to follow from 1911 & 1935
1911 Directory
Taylor, all, 1, 2, & 3
Spon End 1, 2 & 3
The end of Spon End and the beginning of Spon Street are contiguous.
So it's the same page.
Spon Street 2, 3 & 4
1935 Butts 1, 2 & 3
1935 Spon Street 1, 2, 3, & 4
1935 Taylor all, 1-5

Hi, here's a bit more to help with the placement of the courts along the Butts, and the location of Sovereign Terrace.
It's the near location anyway, I haven't found a map with it clearly shown.
The directory is 1911.

Court 9 was behind 53 and 55. 1 Sovereign Terrace was behind court 5 (see 1949 for numbering)

Heathite. Thanks to your directories I have found proof that my wife's grandmother was a nurse, she always thought so, but vague memories. Her grandmother lived at no 4 Sovereign Terrace and it says nurse against her name, Mary Robinson. |
