I have a bronze Territorial War Medal 1914-1919 for voluntary services overseas. It was given to me by grandmother. I think the name is Alfred John New, it has the service no.1651 and he was a gunner in the Royal Field Artillery Unit. I think he was killed in action in 1917 but do not know any more. I would love to find out more information. I think it might be my auntie's father, her married name was Brown, but have no records of her maiden name.

Looking on Ancestry, a member of the New family has done some research. He was born in 1896. He died in hospital in Coventry on 8 Feb 1917. Doubtful that he was anyone's father. Lived in Southampton with his family in 1911 His father died in 1943, a resident of Portsmouth.

Sorry, what do you mean he was not anyone's father. Was he not married?

Did he have any brothers and sisters? I am trying to find out more about him. All my old relatives have long gone. All I remember is that it either came from my auntie or great grandmother, but do not know what their maiden names. Many thanks again.

Many thanks again for your time and help. None of the siblings names match any of my known relatives. The only thing in common is that Alfred J New died in a Coventry hospital.

There is a death listed on Ancestry for A F New who died 1917 in Coventry aged 20. The F is not very clear on the record so it could well have been transcribed incorrectly. The reference is 6d 878 if you wanted to send for his death certificate.

He may have been issued another number later. The previous document I posted is not very clear but it does say 8/2/17 Coventry Hospital.

Thank you for your helpful information. Would it be possible if you could find out which hospital he died in? And how did he ended up in Coventry? And were was he was posted? As far as I know the medal came from my auntie! Her name was Elsie Brown (married name), do not not know her maiden name. She was from Swindon and was born in 1901. She married William Brown. From the information Midland Red has posted Alfred John New had seven siblings, but none of their names match any of my known relatives. Elsie moved to Coventry in the 70's to live next door to me with my grandmother. That is how I acquired the medal. Until Saturday it has been in a box in the attic. When I did some research I found out that it had his details around the edge of the medal of the soldier. Would love to find out the connection but have hit a brick wall. Thank you.
