Hi, I'm reserching my family tree and I'm trying to find any info about my grandfather who was born in Coventry, his name was Thomas Ward and he was born in 1907. The info I have already is a little bit sketchy and I was hoping that someone using this forum might be able to help. Does anyone know of the Ward family, especially the name of Thomas's parents. Any info will be helpful and appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Jackstar, Ward is quite a common name so do you have any other information, any siblings etc. and I can look on the 1911 census for you. If you know his birth date you could send for his birth certificate which would give his parents name. Any information however small is a help.

Using the free search facility at either findmypast.co.uk or 1911census.co.uk you can find this Ward family in Coventry: W J b.1879 M J b.1869 Florence J b.1905 Thomas J b.1908 Gertrude K b.1911 By searching at familysearch.org, you will find they were living in Earlsdon, the parents were born in Warwickshire and the children in Coventry. Unfortunately with just the parents initials it's not possible to find the marriage at freebmd.org.uk with any certainty, but if you assume the W is William, there's a possibility that William J Ward married Maria Jane Goode at Rugby in the second quarter of 1900 though this would need further confirmation.

Looks right, mcsporran, as the 1911 Census shows them to have completed 10 years of marriage Also, Florence was born in Rugby The parents' birthplaces are shown as Warwickshire, and Thomas's and Gertrude's as Coventry Father's occupation is shown as "Pavior" and they lived at 31 Poplar Road, Coventry Thumbs up

In that case, their marriage is here, and in 1881 the family lived at Stretton on Dunsmore.

My family were originally from Coventry, my granddad Thomas Ward was born there in 1907 and I have found out that his father was called Job Ward, he was born in 1882. I think that his wife was called Elizabeth, and she was born in 1862. If anyone has any info about Job or Elizabeth? Please get in touch, any info no matter how small will be gratefully received. Thanks

Hello Jackstar As far as I can see, only one Thomas Ward was baptised in Coventry between 1905 and 1908 (at St Peter's, Hillfields, on February 14th 1907) and his parents were Benjamin and Alice Ward. That is not to say that your Thomas Ward was not another of that name who was not baptised but I cannot find another born in 1907 in Coventry. Looking for an Alice marrying a Benjamin Ward, I found two between 1895 and 1907 - Alice Seaman in 1st Quarter of 1901 in Prestwich and Alice Jackson in 1st Quarter of 1905 in Sheffield. During 1911, the mother's maiden name was added to birth records, so I searched for children with the surname Ward born to a mother with the maiden name of either Seaman or Jackson from 1911 to 1920. The Seaman version produced one in Middlesborough but the Jackson name produced two in Coventry - Mary A Ward in the 1st Quarter of 1913 and Peter W Ward in the 3rd Quarter of 1919. If either of these names appear in your recent family, I would suggest that you consider the Benjamin and Alice option as a possibility.

Hi, I'm trying to find info about my family who I believe originated from Coventry, their names were Benjamin and Alice Ward (don't know DOB's). They had a son called Thomas who was born in 1907. His death certificate says Jan 1907, but the only one I can find says March 1907? Is there anyone on here who can help me find more information? I am trying to put together a family tree but not got much info about this side of family. Thanks

Hi Jackstar, There is a Baptism record in the parish of St. Peter, Coventry of a Thomas Ward on the 14th of February 1907. His Parents were Benjamin and Alice Ward. Benjamin Ward was a machinist. The family at the time lived at 74 Freehold Street. I looked at the address (74 Freehold Street, Coventry) in the 1911 census- but a Mr John Howell and his family were living there, so presumably the Ward family must have moved from that address sometime between 1907 and 1911. Hope this helps, Luke. Smile

Hi Luke, thanks for the information, I think they might have moved to Sheffield during that period.

If you are looking at an index, as opposed to a certificate, the index would show a death in January as registered in the March quarter

Do these two posts not contradict one another? Oh my The way I read them, Thomas had two different sets of parents (Job and Elizabeth, and Benjamin and Alice) Happy to help with your research . . . Hi Jackstar & Midland Red, I was looking on the public family trees on ancestry and noticed a tree with both Job Ward + Elizabeth and Benjamin Ward + Alice, with both couples having a child called Thomas Ward. According to the tree: Job Ward and Benjamin Ward are brothers (their parents being Thomas Ward (born 1850?) and Jane M Ward (nee: Meek) (born 1845?). Job Ward (born 1867) married Elizabeth Selby (born 1861) and had a son, Thomas Ward (born 1906 Yorkshire). Benjamin Ward (born 1883) married Alice Jackson (1887- 1975) (there is a picture of her on the family tree), they had a son around 1910 (there is no birth certificate attached) (in Yorkshire?). This Thomas Ward (Benjamin and Alice Ward's son) according to the tree married a Lily Beresford (born 1904) in 1927 (in Sheffield). This Thomas Ward had a number of half-siblings (Doris, Jack, Ernest, William and Frank Bradshaw). I'm not sure if either of these are the person you are looking for but could be the source for the confusion? If either of these are the person you are looking for I would be happy to message the person who created the tree (if you don't have an ancestry account). Luke. Smile
