Moore family (inc Fishy Moore)

Looking for help please. I am currently researching the family history, and working now with memories passed down. Family based in Foleshill, Coventry from the mid 1800s, grandmother's maiden name was Moore, I am told that she had a brother Herbert, born about 1870, who owned a fish shop called Fishy Moore's, and another brother or cousin, I don't know which, was a baker known as Cakey Moore. I have read the forum on Fishy Moore's Fish and Chips, but does anyone know the Christian name? I would be very grateful for any help.

Sorry!! Got that slightly wrong, Herbert was the baker, the other brother or cousin was possibly Fishy Moore.

Hello and welcome to the forum Jobp Here's a bit of information that may help you. In the 1911 Census, I found James Thomas Moore, born 1868, Killarney, a Fish Dealer, living at 3 Priory Row, Coventry. Here's an old newspaper advert from 14th October, 1892. UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT. J .T. MOORE, BUTCHER ROW, For Good Fried Plaice and Chipped Potatoes. Oysters and Whelks of the Finest Quality. J.T. has a nicely fitted up room for the use of his customers. Give it a trial. In the 1911 Census again, I found a Herbert Moore, aged 40 years, married to Ada F. Moore, 91-92 Far Gosford Street, his occupation was a Confectioner. I found this advert for him, 23rd November, 1915. TOO LATE FOR CLASSIFICATION. BAKERS (two) Wanted for night staff, to assist.

Thank you so much for the help I spent all afternoon chasing information. Yes, confirmed Herbert was indeed the one I thought, related. But the cakey Moore I am pretty sure must be a cousin as the brother of Herbert, called James was definitely born in Coventry,and in 1922 joined the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, so not a cake maker! Which is interesting as his distant nephew also became a member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers in the 1930's, while he was working at Alfred Herberts, which I see is also being discussed on the forum, I am off to read further! Wow, Jobp, you obviously don't know how famous your 'Fishy Moore' relative was! The shop was part of many of our memories and a vast number of people in Coventry saw the shop as a local legend! Good luck with your searches!

My Dad told me his cousin owned Fishy Moores... the family connection is my Dad's great aunt Ada Waters married James Thomas Moore (who came from Killarney Ireland to Coventry). He was a Fish & Oyster dealer and had a shop at 16 Butcher's Row, Coventry in 1921 (1921 census). Their son Sidney had a fish and chip shop at 8 Howard Street, Coventry in 1921 too. James Thomas's fish shop moved from Butchers row to 32 New buildings in 1936 and was by 1939 was being run by Sidney's son John J Moore (listed in 1939 census). Jack Moore and his wife owned it until 1971, Jack's sister in law and husband managed it from about 1957. Fishy Moores was moved from the New Buildings to Fairfax St in the late 1960s. It wasnt always called Fishy Moores, but Moore's Fish Restaurant bu there was also a place called Moore's Cake Shop. So the fish shop became Fishy Moore's and the cake shop Cakey Moore's. Also Ada's brother Ernest also had a fish and chip shop at 31 Cox St, Coventry, my Grandma Jessie helped run it and inherited the shop in 1955.
