Hi Doug I worked in the Specification Office at Standard from 1966-1972 when I left to have my son. My dad worked in the drawing office for 40 years (as his dad did before him) before he retired around 1980. My husband worked in the Rocket Range, Top Shop, No.15 shop and No.21 shop around 1974. I have great memories of my time working there.

Hi AllesleyKid. Whereabouts was the Specification Office? The name rings a bell but can't place it. I used to work in "Stock Control" from 1969 to 1975 when I took voluntary redundancy!! I worked with some great people, most of whom I've lost touch with. My boss, Colin Harris, now deceased & other workmates were a great bunch. Had some great times, looking back, was prob the most enjoyable job I've ever had. Just didn't realise it then. We used to go over The Herald Pub at lunchtimes quite often. It was always packed out. If any of my old friends see this site, get in touch. Where have all the great British & Coventry industries gone? I'll tell you! Ruined & abandoned by terrible successive governments (stand up Mrs Thatcher for being prob the No.1 culprit.) PS What was your name back then Allesley Kid? Hope you are well. Best wishes. Two famous visitors in 1948 were Fred Perry and Dan Maskell, who, at the invitation of their good friend Capt John Black, who they frequently visited at his home at Mallory Court, took part in an exhibition doubles match on the Standard Tennis Club courts on Tile Hill Lane Left to right : Fred Perry, Paddy Jeffcoatt, Albert Jones, Dan Maskell Paddy Jeffcoatt had been chairman of the club in 1938 when John Black opened the courts, a gift from the Standard Motor Company to the club, whilst Albert Jones was many times the club champion before and after WWII It is recorded that Perry and Jones won 6-8 6-1 Cheers Post copied from topic Famous Coventry Visitors on 18th Jan 2017 3:23 pm

Hi Doug The Specification Office was on Tile Hill Lane, there were 3 girls and around 12 guys in the office. We used to go for a lunchtime drink at The Newlands, no drink and drive laws then. My name back then was Jackie Edwards.

My current cars; they are old friends, like a comfortable pair of slippers. Using them is a constant reminder of the friends and family, many no longer with us, who earned a living building them and played their part in assembly. Their factories may be gone, but the products live on. For anyone wondering: 1959 Triumph Herald Coupe 1962 Triumph Vitesse 1967 Triumph Herald Saloon 1989 Jaguar Sovereign V12

Very nice Glyn Thumbs up A neighbour of our's in Craven Street had three Herald/Vitesses himself, let us use one whenever we liked. The early saloon version is my favourite, I plan on owning one myself some day.

Glyn, wasn't the estate version known as the Triumph Courier? Or was that only the van version?

The Courier was the van version; essentially the estate car without side windows, still a few around. The estate was actually called an estate. A very versatile chassis, the soft top convertible model is probably most desired today though they really need to be garaged to stop them returning to the earth in our climate. The monthly magazine of the Triumph Sports Six Club which caters for these cars is called 'The Courier'.

It's tragic that so many went under. Who was to blame? Bad governments? Unions? or just bad management? Or a combination of all these?
Hi Doug, I was in hospital in the late sixties with a lovely guy called Larry Brotherton, who was in the department that wrote instruction books. I kept in touch with him for a couple of years afterwards then went off abroad to live and lost touch.

My step-dad worked there for years, on one of the lines. His name was Herbert Waterfall. I knew a Sheila Cassidy who was in the offices, she was the image of singer Mary Hopkin.
