Can anyone recall a Motor Works in the Holbrooks / Foleshill area in 1936. I hear the Self Change Gears were in the Holbrooks area
Was this the Motor Works factory in 1936?
My second request where in Holbrooks was a Men's Hostel between 1950-1970
Many thanks

Self Changing Gears was in Lythalls Lane at bottom of the slope near the railway line.
Only car factory that I recall in that area was the Riley works in Beresford Ave.
I believe that Swallow Sidecars in Swallow Rd, Holbrooks later became the SS car works but because of German connection that name was later changed to Jaguar... Les |

My grandfather was briefly manager at Self Changing Gear factory his last job before retirement. He had served throughout the war as Foreman at Hotchkiss works known as The Nuffield Mechanisation in Gosford St, later a part of the University. |

Self Changing Gears was situated at the rear of the Hey Machine Tools factory on Lythalls Lane. I worked at Hey during the 1970's and 80's. I think Hey is still going, just about, but SCG closed down long ago if I remember correctly. |

Self Changing Gears became a part of Alvis, don't know the date. These were large preselector type gearboxes and Alvis used them in their military vehicles. |

Hi. I have viewed this forum a few times but this is one of my first posts. I did an apprenticeship at Self Changing Gears on Lythalls Lane back in the early 80's. The first year was at Alvis on Holyhead Road then 3 years in Holbrooks.
Anyway, I started in 1984 at Alvis and oddly enough SCG was bought out and moved to the new Alvis plant at Walsgrave.
So, I'm asking if anyone was there at that time and can recall some of the other employees.

My grandfather was works manager at Self Changing Gears for a brief period in the early 50s, but retired early due to his wife's final illness.
