Have just come across an article from 2008 which may interest some members
As well as the motor cycle interest, there's a photo showing some shop names in Jordan Well |

They do now (it's also mentioned in the article Neil ).
When they were based in Whitefriars Lane the nearby Mermaid Inn in Gosford Street was their unofficial 'watering hole'.

A good friend of mine is Arthur Davis who's in that Telegraph photo he's still the secretary and one of the longest running members of the club.
Below are two photo's i took from a scrapbook i was looking through that someone had bought to the Hoar Park Wednesday motorcycle meet. They show the clubhouse being built in Whitefriars Lane.

Hi Catshed,
If the Antelope MCC meet at the Dyers, what happened to the 'Antelope' Club which I used to frequent occasionally in the late 60's/early 70's which was next door to the Tam o' Shanter Club alongside the Ring Road near the Butts ? Are either still there ? ! |

The building still stands, the club members declined in the 80's but had a resurgence in the 90's, they started to meet in the Broomfield Tavern but now use the Dyers as a base, I'm not a member but know many of them, they're all a good bunch of lads and lasses, I see one of its oldest members and secretary Arthur Davis quite often.
Here's some of its history explained better than I can do.

On reading the article on the achievements of the Antelope Motor Club brings back memories to when I first started to ride in 1956 and I would be interested to read more from your friend about one active member I lost contact many years ago. This gentleman taught me how to pass my driving test, ride on rough ground, strip and rebuild engines. I believe his name was Reg or Les. He severed a leg injury due to a motorbike accident and drove a motorbike plus sidecar. He lived with his partner at top of East Street; Payne's Lane end. |

I was a member there too for a while. I tried to find it on Google Maps street view, but it has been so long and so many changes since I was last in Coventry, I can't find anything left of the building..

Hi Mike
I used to go in the Antelope club occasionally with a friend of mine called Brian Madge who I think was on the committee at the time. He was a tall man with an Exeter accent who drove diggers for a living, sadly no longer with us. To answer your question about what happened to the club building, I'm pretty sure it's ended up being part of Carey's night club which is still there - hope this helps |

My Dad joined the Antelope Club about 1946, just as the background colour of the club logo went from dark to lighter blue. He bought one of the last dark blue badges which I wore on my old Wrangler jacket throughout the mid/late 70s.
When I got rid of the jacket, I took all the patches off and can now find them all except the Antelope Club one - typical !
I picked up some Antelope Club newsletter/booklets at a car boot last week dating from 1957-1961. If there's any interest here I'll scan the covers.
Alongside was also a huge pile of Antelope Grasstrack meeting programmes late 60s/early 70s, but the guy wanted too much for them.
