Have you got any photos of the apprentice training school? I was there from 1979 until it closed in 1982.

Just discovered this thread about Morris Engines. My father worked there, I don't know the dates but it would have been the 50's to the 60's. His name was Bill McSparron (probably known as Bill or Mac). All I know about his job is he worked on machining flywheels. My brother and I went to the Christmas parties although I remember nothing about them. I walked through the machine shop once and I remember the noise was deafening and oppressive and I wondered how anyone could stand it for more than a few minutes. I remember playing darts and snooker with my father at the social club. I remember watching the Coventry Evening Telegraph Cup Final (The Sphinx vs some other team) on their football field. I remember going to the fields there to collect conkers as there was a horse chestnut tree on the grounds and I remember exploring the old air-raid shelters there too. Nothing more to add but I enjoyed seeing the photos that people posted. It's sad that so many of the old Coventry sites have disappeared without trace. They should rename one of the nearby streets Morris Street or Road.

They are good photos. As mentioned in my post previously, my dad worked in the progress department in the valve shop. Have you got any photos of the valve shop and also the old foundry that closed in 1980?

Hello Gazolba, nice to hear from you so far away. I never new your dad, it was a big place but I do remember the xmas parties and playing down the air raid shelters daring each other to go further in, then once in someone would shout GHOST and we would bolt for the way out, sheer panic but great fun. Also the social club, a bottle of pop and a packet of crisps and a game of cricket on the sports field, collecting conkers, all good clean fun, HAPPY DAYS. I wiil have a look amongst my photos at the weekend for some photos of the sports field and of the flywheel section or what was left of it when I took the photo

Les - thank you for posting the photos. Yours are possibly the only ones of the factory in its last years so are very important. Can I encourage you to submit them to this website: www.geograph.org.uk - where all the photos are being archived by the British Museum's digital archive project. Thanks.

Hello jvb, I've taken quite a few, it will take a while to go thro' my albums, each one will require a caption describing the location, especially the internal shots - leave it with me, stay tuned
