I've only just found this link to the Morris. I was there between 1969 and 1976, initially as an apprentice and then in Production Material Control working for Tony Dolan, Ron Gunnian and Albert Shufflebotham. I do remember running a few cart races around the car park, bowling at lunchtime with the guys from the drawing office and playing for the Morris football team. Great days when looking back with rose tinted glasses on.

Hello Les
I am sure there are plenty of people still interested. Have you got any more pictures of the Courthouse Green factory? It would be great if you have.

Wondering if anyone remembers my late dad, Josef Hanik, who was a production control clerk at Morris Engines then BL? He worked alongside a German chap called Dieter Goertz. Both came to the UK after the war and found work in Coventry like so many refugees. Dad worked there all his life but died in 1981 aged 57. He was very tall and thin with thick white hair. I remember being taken to the factory as a child to meet Dad from work and sitting in the gatehouse by a lovely open fire as, having caught the old number 16 bus from Earlsdon to Broadgate, we'd walked to Courthouse Green from there and hit caught in heavy rain.

Hi Les,
I am also looking forward to seeing the 1949 pictures etc. I am researching Ken Miles the racing driver and he worked at Morris Engines, CourtYard Green in 1948, not sure about 49. Would like to know if you have any info from 1948 which may mention Ken Miles, he worked as a development engineer. In 1939 and after the immediate war Miles worked at Wolseley.

Would this be the racing driver who was killed in America ?. I believe he had a big hand in developing the Shelby Cobra. The Americans thought him a bit of an eccentric calling him "sidebite" because of his habit of talking out of the side of his mouth. Another nickname was "Teddy tea bag" no prizes for this one !. He was a big pal of Steve Mcqueen who himself was no mean driver.
Although we share the same surname I,m pretty sure we are not related. |

matchle55, yes, that Ken Miles. I have been researching his early motoring life here in England for a book. He took part in hill climbs and sprints in the late 40`s to the middle part of 51 in a variety of cars. I am not covering his time in America as that has been written about quite a bit.
Ken`s grandparents ran the Henry Miles Tea & Coffee company in Sutton Coldfield.

Hello everyone. I've just came across this forum and I have found it very interesting. My grandfather used to work at Morris Engines from the mid 60s up until it closed in 82. His name was Peter Baghurst but I believe anyone who worked with him knew him as Bilko. I'm curious if anyone here remembers working with him and has any memories they could share with me. Thanks again. |

Unfortunately I know very little information. From what I've been told he had something to do with the engine block castings or machining and J block has been mentioned to me as well. Thanks for the response. |
