MR. Imagine sitting on that bus, with the gas tank at your backside and they sound the sirens.

During the war Coventry hired buses from various other operators around the country. In 1942 London Transport loaned 26 of their ST type double deckers which dated from 1930, petrol engined rather than the then standard diesel. Six were converted to use producer gas and fitted with trailers similar to those in the post 775 photo. They ran on the 18A service to Canley which didn't require reversing. The buses were returned to London in 1944 or 1945.

From the latest Coventry bus to a real old-timer. This bus originally started service with Coventry Transport as it then was in the early 1950s, one of nearly 100 identical vehicles that were much needed replacements for pre-war models that had an extended service life due to the war. It is of course a Coventry built Daimler, a CVA6 model with 60 seat bodywork by Metro-Cammell of Birmingham. After serving the city for 18 years it was sold to another operator in Long Itchington and then passed to a group of enthusiasts who reinstated it back to Coventry condition. The following years took their toll on the condition of the vehicle and in 2015 another extensive preservation effort began. This involved the complete disassembly of the bus and rebuilding almost from scratch, a process that has taken five years and great expense, but at last the bus has now been able to return to the city where its story began.
