Coventry Buses - past and present

Most drivers did not like driving 100. When introduced it had a fully automatic gearbox which proved sluggish and Lydgate Hill was always a challenge. CCT Engineers then fitted a manual crash box. CCT Buses at this time were all pre-select and the driving technique for a manual is totally different and most drivers were never trained on it. So only a few of the "enthusiast" type drivers would ever volunteer on this. Ultimately CCT Engineers converted it again to a pre-select but by that time the Crossley engine as fitted being non-standard in an AEC + Gardner engined fleet (I do know there were 16 or so Daimlers) became expensive to maintain and was withdrawn. So, Annewiggy, unlikely your dad drove it but not impossible

Hi all There are restrictions about what we can take on bus. I've always known that some materials/goods are prohibited to be carried on public transport. The rule was, if you could stick it up your jumper it was ok. I witnessed as a school child, someone being told that they could not bring a gallon paraffin on to a bus.

I was 91 years old and got thrown off a bus because I had fish and chips in a carrier bag. We were told the driver was within his rights because people might not like the smell? Huh! (not Coventry)

The rules for NX Coventry are: All luggage that customers bring onto vehicles is carried at the discretion of the driver and the following items will not be carried in any circumstances: - explosive, hazardous or combustible material - uncovered tins of paint or any other liquid - sheets of glass - non-folding bicycles - any individual item of luggage (except suitcases) weighing in excess of 15 kg (33 lbs.) - any item that is likely to cause injury or offence to our customers or to staff - any item that is likely to cause damage to our vehicles.
