Coventry Buses - past and present

Lots of shoppers visible in The Burges here, in this view taken back in the early 1960's! Also clearly visible as well and very hard to miss (lol), is a "RADFORD" bound AEC RT double decker and that is being followed by a nice old Triumph Herald! This Sunday, August 19th, Gaydon Motor Museum are holding a buses festival. Three former Coventry buses are expected to attend, probably including a couple of these city-built Daimlers. Further details.

All three of these Corporation buses pictured above have been fuelled up ready and all being well, will be at the Gaydon Motor Museum this coming Sunday! (19th).

I wonder if any forum members might be able to guess the location of this photo, which was taken in around about 1960 time? The biggest clue to help identify it, is the big long wall on the right hand side, as people from a certain area in Coventry will easily recognize that!!! (I must just add that it's no longer there today!)

Does anyone recognize this bus passenger in my photo taken in Pool Meadow here? You could well be either a relative of his, or a former neighbour or work colleague, etc. The photo was taken around about 1962 time.

The middle of the three pictures on this page in the Railways topic shows in the background, a Daimler KPL bus. I think this may have been mentioned before but I can't find the picture, though it is on flickr here. The KPL (Knight, Pieper, and Lanchester) was an advanced design, using chassisless construction and a petrol electric transmission. Unfortunately the design was subject to a patent dispute and was abandoned. Although 12 of the vehicles were built, photographs all seem to show DU1251, but it appears in various versions, with and without the roof and in dark and light paintwork. One can only wonder what it was doing in the goods yard, though this does date the photograph to about 1911. For the mechanically minded there is a detailed report of the vehicle in the Commercial Motor journal archive from 1910.

mcsporran said "One can only wonder what it was doing in the goods yard," The tall chimney on the left hand side of the stationmasters house suggests this is the passenger station side of Warwick Road and the presence of advertising hoardings would support this. The condition of the ground does look like a goods yard though! Peter.

Indeed it is, Peter - this is at the lower end of a "roadway" down from Warwick Road to the station forecourt. The pub (Rocket) can be seen above the head of the policeman looking right. The vehicles are turning left into Eaton Road.

Does anyone know at all please where this photo here of some trainee Coventry bus drivers and clippies might have been taken, as I've sadly no idea at all and curiosity is starting to get the better of me now? lol. The photo was taken in 1940 and the only big clue I can see that will hopefully help to identify its location is that very distinctive looking fence on the right hand side there! There appears to be an old house / cottage just about visible in the background behind the bus crew, but unfortunately not enough of it is visible to be able to help us.

How about Allesley CKV?

It looks like a test/race track rather than a normal road.

When my dad became a driver just after the war he said he had to take a bus round a skid track and tip it to 45%. Unfortunately he did not say where the track was! How long has MIRA been there ?

"THANK YOU" for your much appreciated reply Prof, as you've given me food for thought by mentioning Allesley, as you may well have hit the nail on the head? Could the photo actually be on what is called the Allesley bypass, with the golf course and park being behind the big long fence on the right there? The way that the pavement is, with it having grass on either side of it and as seen here, having grass between the road and the pavement itself, could well be what is now the Allesley bypass, as it does have a similar type of path there today and the same slight bend in the road as well! The house just about visible in the background, could well be located at the top of Allesley Old Road (or is it classed as the bottom of the road ?) lol. I'd be very surprised if it's not still there today and I'll have to have a quick look on Google Street View to see if it is or not? There's every chance that we could be completely wrong with its location and the photograph could well have been taken on the other side of the city for all we know??? lol. Thanks again though Prof for your helpful reply, as I shall keep on looking for any possible clues, so as to hopefully help identify its location???????
