Just found a clear shot of Tram 44, it's on the new 'Coventry Street View Gallery'. It's under 'B', Bishop Street, 1939 (You can find it under the 'Forum Specific' menu on the left of this page).

Did not know whether you would be interested in this tram picture I have found in the box of Coventry stuff I bought. It is a very busy picture with trams and buses. Obviously pre war because of the number of cars and men around. Can any one date it for me.

Hi Annewiggy, Wave Someone will be able to put an exact date on it I am sure, but I think that it was late 1930s. Wave

Going back to Greg's post 19 on this thread, did anyone ever find the copse on the Fillongley to Meriden Road and the laid-to-rest tram remains?

I last saw tram 32 at Maxstoke ten years ago and looking at the recent photo I'm suprised it still exists. It was bought by Mr. Cartwright, timber merchant, when the trams were scrapped in 1942 for a summer house. As an 8 year old at the time I used to cycle from my home at Foleshill to see it most weekends as I was a tram fanatic even then as my dad had been a tram conductor until Adolf made him a bus conductor.

Still clinging on four years ago, No.32 in 2009 Surely someone should attempt to persuade whoever owns it now to let it go to the Motor Museum. Really needs saving for Coventry posterity, even if it's just a shell

This photo takes me back to when I was about four years old when my dad was a tram conductor, he came home one day and told me that the trolley on his tram had dewired outside the Empire cinema and damaged the canopy. I can remember items like this from years ago but not what I had for lunch today. The conductor in the photo, Ernie Wright, was known for not using the bell to signal to the driver, he whistled through his teeth and that was a loud whistle, I can even remember it. Ernie Wright's son George was a driver and later inspector on the buses, two very nice people.

Another incident that involved my dad as a tram conductor occurred one night when he was on the last tram to Bedworth, he was standing on the platform and there was a snow storm, as the tram approached the New Inn bridge he coughed and his false teeth went flying out into the snow-covered road. He stopped the tram and he and the driver searched for the teeth but couldn't find them so they carried on to Bedworth. On the way back they stopped and had another search and after about five minutes they found them undamaged.

Apart from the circumstances, that's a great photo, 20A I am sure you have access to the old newspaper archive and know all the details but I looked the incident up and No. 20 was going towards Bedworth and the accident happened opposite the Longford Police Station, the front wheels left the rails. As I can see from your photograph, it was open topped and all the passengers were injured. Luckily, a considerable amount of passengers had dismounted at the Longford Bridge stopping place. It seems the conductress was extricated by a number of muscular miners who were able to quickly raise the overturned tram car and thus release her. I found another accident involving Nos. 16 and 49, too gruesome to report here in detail, it was October 1918, I think the White Street area.
