The building in the background was once a flour mill but when I worked there as a lorry driver it was Goodwin Foster Brown wholesale grocers. Les
This 1983 view from White Street shows the former Goodwin Foster Brown flour mills on the left and Wheatley Street School on the right, with an area of temporary car parking in the foreground. These buildings were completely cleared away shortly afterwards for the construction of Coventry's new bus garage. TBH I cannot recall the buildings really even though I must've wandered past them on my way up to Highfield Road. |

Anyone on here go to Wheatley Street School around about 1950 until 1955 ?
I attended Wheatley Street School (Nursery and Primary) from about 1947 until about 1951. I can't remember the names of any of the teachers but do remember well, like you, the smell of the building, the daily dose of cod liver oil and the camp beds for the daily rest in the nursery. We lived around the corner in Priory Street and I spent many happy hours fishing for sticklebacks in Swanswell Park and playing on the many bomb sites. Happy days.

Heres an interesting view - Mods feel free to move to any more suitable thread but a pre-ring-road image from St Michaels showing the soon to be demolished Ford Street with buildings including the Flour Mills and Wheatley school.

That school looks like a great building. Are there any more photographs of it?

Wheatley St School is where my dad and aunt were educated (?) after Stoke National. Dad left aged 13. It is also where I had to go from Folly Lane to sit the eleven plus examination! |

Don't think we've seen this one before as it's unusually at the eastern end of Wheatley Street. The junction with Perkins Street on the right. The photographer has their back to the junction with Vine Street. I think the factory on the left was part of an old chemical works which has been mentioned on this thread before.

Wheatley Street School seems to have been around for "donkeys` years". Don`t know when it was built but my mother, born in 1917, went to Wheatley Street after she left St Marks School on Stoney Stanton Road. The school playground wall was also her garden wall when she lived at 22 George Street.

Looking through the newspaper, it was built about 1891. |

I think the Wheatley Street School must have had multiple and concurrent users in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
I remember part of the site was used by the Local Education Authority for teaching Asian children who were refugees from Kenya and Uganda (my mother was an English teacher there between 1968 and 1970). The part of the site used for teaching the refugees was called 'The Priory Centre'.
There was also a nursery that I believe was housed in a different part of Wheatley Street School. I attended the nursery between 1968 and 1970 and at this stage it wasn't housed in the 'temporary buildings' that a later 'inmate' has recalled elsewhere in this thread. I remember the ring road was under construction when I was at the nursery and the nursery playground dissolved into a building site (I recall being able to walk through the 'playground' and 'building site' to the subway that now leads from what was the White Street coach park to Pool Meadow).
