Working Men's, Sports and Social clubs

Went past Stoke Working Mens Club yesterday and they're starting to bulldoze it down, brought a few tears/memories back - 'what a waste'

The Jag Daimler Club is still there, but only just!! It is closing soon. I lived in Radford as well and used to go there with my family. I remember it had a childrens room, snooker tables, and fab Dance room. I used to go at the weekends and you couldn't get on the dance floor as it was so busy. I think they did meals at one time as well. It was a very smart club. Times have changed. I went a few weeks ago to a 70's night there, as my nephew was DJ. It was a really good night, local singer, local group "The Breakfast club" and lots of good music to get you on the dance floor. The turnout was poor though and the room was in need of decoration. I think we may have been in the old dance room, it felt sad. I think people don't use social clubs for entertainment now, they are probably considered old fashioned. I had some happy times there anyway.

I well remember the GEC sports club, it being only a bike-ride from our house, and because my Mum worked at the GEC. As was rightly said, the model railway club had a 5" / 7" gauge track layout there. Also, there was a cricket pitch, football pitch(es), tennis courts, a children's play area with roundabout and swings etc and even a rifle range! There was a large pavilion with a bar upstairs and a balcony overlooking the cricket pitch. Haven't been for forty years, of course, and I know the Allard Way cut through it at one time, but I wonder if any of it is left?

Sports pavilion is still there, I believe it now doubles up as the clubhouse for the Grange Golf Club.This is due,of course, to the sad demise of The Grange which was formerly the golf clubhouse. Mods note : see separate thread re "Copsewood Grange"

The club in question is the "Commer Club". One of two clubs supported by the Rootes Group - Chysler - Peugeot for their employees. The clubs were run by a management team and employees representatives

Stoke Ex-Servicemens Club - revisited 30 June 2011

Went to see what was left of the Cox St Club just bricks and twisted metal, I feel a loss of my family history as 5 generations lived within its shadow, I myself was born next door in Grove St. Sadly I have no photos of the old club and was wondering if anyone has or knows how I can get them.

I was trying to find so more history on the Cox St. premises and found this article. I reduced it, in case it was too boring It is interesting to read about the start of the club because I thought it opened at Cox St to start with. I also found the Steward and Stewardess in 1911 at Cox St, John and Ada Kelly, not too far back in time for someone on here to think they could be a relative. Still no photo though, I have found plenty of old Cox St pics but can't relate to where no 54 would have been on them. I can put them on if someone wants to check them out.

Evening Dutchman, thanks for that, I can also get a better impression now of the Phoenix Foundry at the bottom as you described. There appears to be a gap on the corner of Grove Street at the side of the club, do you mean that is where they extended it?

Yes, at first I think with a temporary games room but later with a more permanent building covering the whole site.
