Hi there, Coombe Social is still going strong. I went there in 2008 to help celebrate its 75th anniversary and put that up on my www.clubhistorians.co.uk website plus I mention it in my book. A big Welsh contingent because of the local mines, plus some Scottish as well. Italians were ex POWs who decided to stay after the war, some of them marrying local girls.

Three years late. Hope you're still on this forum any longer. Your grandparents would have to have been very old as the Coventry WMC was one of the oldest in the country, founded originally in 1860 and joining the CIU in 1862. It started off in rooms above a shop, set up by a group of weavers. It moved several times, such as to Cox Street which is probably where most people remember it being, also called the Cox Street Club. It was a very successful club in its heyday. Sadly no longer with us. More than half the city's clubs have gone now.

Enjoyed your youtube video of Canley Club, it was a big part of my life in 1970s/80s, nice to see the pictures of members, committee members, and remember Joe and Barbara well, Barbara was always immaculately dressed, also Norman pictured with his wife, he sat in the games room and ran the snooker order book, buy him a pint of mild and you would be next on, they were happy times for me, lots of happy memories. |

Hi Mick, good to hear from you again and to know you liked the video of the club. Shame it's now completely gone, I was hoping some small part of it could continue for the local residents. Nowhere to go now on the estate, just the Sovereign pub or stay at home. I'm in touch with Joe and Babs, they let me use some of their pics. I remember Norman now you mention his name. Lots of happy memories for us all. Keep in touch.

I am way out of touch as I didn't know that Canley Club had gone. Don't get out that way much now. Often went in there in the 60s and 70s with a couple of good friends Mick McCausland and Wal Cope, both now sadly gone. Just old and knackered

Yes, it's gone. Closed down two years ago though people were still using it. One night it was open, next day closed and soon boarded up, after which it became a target for vandals and arsonists. Big fire in late Aug 2013 and this April demolition team sent in. Watch the video if you haven't already... might bring back a few memories.

You may have known some of my family, we were regular Club goers.

Like so many pubs and clubs in Coventry the Stoke Ex is gone and forgotten now Rob, if you look back on this topic (post 48) you'll find some pictures of its demolition unfortunately. |

The Coventry Telegraph fails again. For them it is the "Carley Sports and Social Club in Marley Road".

The club belonged to the school and church. It had nothing to do with the gas works. |
