You've never swum at Kenpas/Oasis then? The water was pumped from underground, always freezing even during a heatwave. My legs turned blue!

Where was Gosford Park swimming pool? I assume it's all gone now. My home town (Nelson) had a 'Lido' and we went there once. It was so cold there was nobody in the water! It was on the top of a hill over the town.

It was sandwiched between the railway line (now a road) and the houses in Kingsway, totally hidden from the main road.

You assume correctly. I think it's a council gritting depot now?

Hi Baz. Your pic looks like Priory Street Baths, I think it is on here somewhere, or something very similar. I worked for the company that demolished all that, and I remember when we dropped the chimney it was a bit dodgy being so near the road and the new swimming baths on the opposite side of the road. Hi all
Somewhere???? I do have a pic of members of my past family at the baths. We have shoe boxes full of pics which I was going to sort through thirty years ago. Time does fly, hey! |

My husband once went to a Turkish Baths in Holyhead Road, about 1959, it was on the corner of Meriden St, he thinks, he only went once and didn't like it, gave him a headache, however it was run by a husband and wife. It was before the bridge towards the Alvis. |

Hi Foxcote
I thought that it was on the corner of Chester St, but a stand (I am sitting just now) to be corrected. Hope you ok. |

Hello Phillip, it could well be, his 'Meriden St' was a bit of a wild-card I reckon

Hi Foxcote
I had relatives at No 8 Chester St, (the first residential house in the fifties) & I recall strangers knocking on their door with their duffle bags & towels. The walls of the Turkish Baths were painted turquoise which were visible from the road.
I might still be wrong, I was under ten at the time. |

Hey, perhaps it was my husband with his duffle bag In his memory, the man's name could have been Ray, and it was called 'Rays Turkish Bath and Massage', he can't recall the colour turquoise cos of the steam
He was only about 15 and he went with some chaps from work, he was put in a box with his head sticking out and he was petrified, it was hot and 'orrible and was glad to get out. |
