Hi everyone, I think I have searched correctly and could not find anything on Coventry Darts Leagues. When my football and rugby playing days finished, I turned to playing team darts for various pubs and clubs in Coventry leagues. Remember the Wednesday night Chapelfields League well. Anyone else ?

When I lived in Allesley Park, I drank in the Minstrel Boy, our star player was Steve Beaton, eventually he went to live in Southam and was a great player to have on your side.... Cheers

I played darts, after a fashion, for the Devonshire Arms circa 1983/84 in a league that took place on a Monday night. Not sure which district we came under. The only teams that I can remember playing against were The Grapes in a Cup match and the Live and Let Live in Deedmore Road........ an interesting fixture! I'm afraid after that my memory is somewhat hazy but I do recall playing teams from quite a fair distance away throughout Coventry. It certainly wasn't just 'local' pub teams that we played. Just remembered, we also played The Sportsmans Arms on the A45............. quite a trek from Wyken! Cheers

When playing for Masseys, we played on Monday nights. I think it was a CIU league and it was darts and dominoes. Wednesday night was the Chapelfields league and we also played on a Friday night (cannot remember the name of the league)

I think this is Dave Hirons, He was always a keen player for the pub, and a fair player himself Cheers

It depends how long ago you are referring to, however later on there was a guy at the Minstrel called Dave Round who was team captain. His sons Mark and Paul used to play at the Minstrel as well. I have played against them many times Cheers

Coventry has always had its fair share of Darts Leagues and I think I must have played in most of them. Unfortunately health problems prevent me playing now but I really enjoyed my time on the oche. In my view the league that is run most efficiently is the Friday night Coundon and District league. Other people may well think differently and of course they are entitled to their opinion but that is MY view. Oh well, I can always watch it on telly Thumbs up

Hi GVB, the Friday night league was always good. I played for Massey Ferguson club for many years during the late 80's and through the 90's. We won the Champion of Champions while playing for them. I will have to dig out my cert to see the year. As a team we started in Eastern Green club, moved to the Standard pub and then on to Masseys when Brian Davies kept it. Who did you play for?

Hi Mick if you played for the Masseys on a Monday night it must have been the Works League as the C.I.U league was just C.I.U clubs.

The last set of teams I was with were as follows. M&B Monday night I played for Bishopsgate A, Chapelfields Wednesday, Chestnut Tree and Coundon Friday Bishopsgate B. I used to really enjoy my darts even though like most players I had good and bad nights.

Memory being a somewhat dubious tool for me some of this may be wrong, but here goes. I played for the Shepherd and Shepherdess when I was about 17-19, Gerry Hyland was the captain. Then I stopped playing for a while before we formed a team in the Golden Cross. We won promotion season after season in very close competition with The Winnal Pub, my finest hour being in reaching the semi-finals of the Coventry singles. This was a Wednesday night league as I recall. A couple of us also played for The Royal Warwicks on a Friday night - always a good spread. I played for The Greyhound for a while when Craig was the manager (forgotten his surname, but he was a big darts man). I also played in a Sunday night Darts/Crib/Pool/Bowls league, which was run by a brewery on a Sunday night around their pubs. I played for The Golden Cross, and I remember playing against The Acorn up Bell Green and the Half Moon in Brandon.
