Working Men's, Sports and Social clubs

Thinking about the earlier property that was used in New Street, it would have to have been rather large and there were a few pubs. I have taken this shot from 'Pictures of Coventry' but it would be interesting to see where they were for the first 40 years. The White Bear 1822-1958

Or this as potential upstairs perhaps? It is the corner of Cox St and New St. gratefully taken from 'Pictures of Coventry'. The Livery Stables, 1822-1961 - there's new building going on in the background.

Not really. The original building in Cox Street wasn't that big to begin with. It was expanded gradually over the years.

Thanks Dutchman and Foxcote for all your info the photos and map, its helped me understand where everything was. I found the article very interesting i did'nt know the club as so old.

Thank you Dutchman, The reason I gave the 30's was because my grandparents had the traditional clock presented to them when they left, so it was a wild guess, but thanks for the map anyway.

We used to have some very happy times, in the 50's and sixties, going to the Miner's club in Keresley End. My mum played bingo there every Friday night, leaving us kids, with our dad, watching 'Bonanza' We kids went on trips in the summer and to parties at Christmas. There were often dances there and I remember, aged about 10, learning to Twist! I remember calling in there, to buy peanuts, on the way back from Brownies.

My grandfather, George Tranter, was a life member of the Vauxhall WMC in Eld Road, Foleshill, and in the 50's I can remember trips to Wicksteed Park. We were given tickets for lunch and were told not to lose them "NO ticket, no food"! There were Christmas parties for us kids. I can also recall a magnificent Bowling Green to the rear of the property with balaustrades and steps down.There was also an upstairs concert room. I wasn't allowed to play snooker until I had mastered (but never did) the game of billiards. i had to stand on an R Whites wooden crate in order to reach the table and make a bridge. I wish, Dutchman. We had a parcel label with an elastic band through it which was attached to a button. A bit of rough and tumble and you went hungry!

Hi Colin, The Barry James Trio actually played at our wedding reception in 1964. I bumped into Derek the younger brother last night 14th March. The mum and dad died some time ago and his older brother Barry died more recently. Derek is still playing and singing although mostly solo to backing tracks. He is coming to play with our band Phoenix Rock'n'Roll in a couple of weeks time if you want to catch up with him. We are starting a Rock'n'Roll night every Friday at the Longford Engine on 29th and he will be there. Everyone is welcome and its free, and there is room to dance if you want. Graham

Does anyone remember the Charterhouse Working Men's Club in David Road, Stoke? My dad belonged to their fishing club, and as a child I used to go on Sunday mornings with them in the coach. I started fishing aged 6. At night they would stop off at another club where there was always a 'Free and Easy' and buffet. My dad was always the first on the stage to sing, he had a lovely voice, trouble was he could never remember the words!! Oh the embarrassment Does anyone know if it's still there.. bet it's not Happyhippie

Checked on google, it says "The club is at 48 David Road and is now a Private Members Club"
