As the Jules Verne, I believe that it was a unique pub. The decor was superb, the Shanghai Waterfront having the prow of a wooden sailing ship projecting into it and barrels to sit on. Another area had saloon bar swing doors to pass through and shop fronts of 'wild west' character as its walls. In the room with the hot air balloons suspended from the ceiling there were a set of railway carriage compartments at one end , just for twosomes, I think.

I lived opposite the Whitmore from 1955 to 1968 when I married, my mum lived there till about 1983. My dad was always there, he used to take bets for the bookies. I used to love the carnivals there, they were great fun, sorry to here it has gone. We had our wedding reception there, I only had to walk across the road.

I have a list of inns and taverns in Coventry dated 1850, a grand total of 201 (if I counted correctly), also a map 1884 titled The Drink Plan of COVENTRY. I could try and upload them if anyone is interested, they were with my father's belongings. Cheers

If you look on post 407 of this topic you will find a copy of the 1884 map. The list would be interesting Covlass. Mods note: Click here to see Annes version of the map.

My father used to have a cutting of a musical act that listed every pub in the city centre. I think it was a sort of memory man feat, which used a sort of doggerel to enable the memorizing of so many names.

Think this (or one similar) has been seen before but worth another share. I would have loved that Lotus 25 neon in my house!

Hi Covlass I can read the 2nd and 3rd but the 1st, 4th and map are too small to read. The map is very interesting. The city had loads of pubs and sometimes the only way to locate a place is to relate it to the nearest pub. I spent a lot of time at the Real Ale Rambles site making sense of the images I've got. The last pub I investigated was the Mechanics Arms which turned out to be previously called the Fountain.

I am now back on the Moray Firth after driving up from Coventry yesterday morning (left 8am). My wife and I had a walk around the city centre on Saturday evening before going for an excellent curry in Upper Spon Street. We walked from the Britannia (now a bit of a dump and dated, but I remember it when it was first opened as the De Vere, an upmarket hotel as competition to the Leofric). However I digress. How things have changed ! No city centre hostelries such as the Alhambra, Silver Sword, Smithfield, Mercia, Yates and the other pub on High St., Penny Black, Three Tuns, Climax, Market Tavern, Thistle, Jaguar. The only ones I remember still trading was the Tally Ho! and Golden Cross! Oh my

Hi, just found this site after searching online for the Jules Verne. I remember going there when it was first opened and pretending I was 18! I recognise a couple of people in the photo, especially Mick Morby, 2nd from the right. Knew him for years and used to live a few doors away from him on Allesley Old Rd.

Sad indeed, Neil Here it is in 1916 on the corner of Broomfield Road, and again in 2011.
