Was that where they showed the biblical movies too. ?
At one time yes but by the mid-1960s almost everything there was X-rated.

At least the cinemas were all easy to walk to from the city, well, most of them.
Five of them were even easier to walk to from the middle of Gosford Street where I lived!

Talk about being spoilt for choice then Dutchman. If I may mention the movie theatre's here, usually a group of screens showing maybe six movies all at once. Take your pick but just the one movie, not like an A and a B like in the old days. |

We used to get our money's worth in those days, a real night out. Last time I went to the movies, I felt like I had been robbed.. |

I remember the sound heard when 'Earthquake' was shown, we were waiting for the first shock waves to come as you could hear the rumbling but the second after shock came as a surprise and I felt the whole row of seats jump. Now where would that have been shown in Coventry ?

Theatre One if I remember correctly, it had the most advanced sound system in the city.

I have a feeling I saw Earthquake at the Godiva cinema. I know I saw Towering Inferno there and I seem to recall the Godiva was quite into showing the disaster films that were so big in the 1970s. |

That rang a bell Mister D-Di, that was the first ever drive-in movie we went to (although here in Perth) and The Towering Inferno was showing and my son had a cold. My son and daughter were in the back seat of the car and all we could hear throughout was sniff, sniff, sniff. I would add, I ever did enjoy the drive-ins much. I always enjoyed the Gaumont, when the lights went up during the intermission we would always look around to see if there was anyone we knew, oh and those beautiful chandeliers. |

Remember seeing a picture with a guy pumped with electricity, can't remember if it was the 'electric' man, or 'Frankenstein' or if it was Lon Channey but sure had me on the edge of the seat.Remember taking a young lady to the Globe, saw a film about a boxer but his mother wanted him to play the violin, a real weepy, Looked like I'd been under a shower when we came out, mind you she did let me search for her Hanky' 'Oh what days they were.
The cinema at 'Orlando' where you stand, and the screen is around you, and your shot at from all side's by the indians was quite a novelty. |

Kaja - This movie you saw with the young lady would have been, I suspect, 1939's GOLDEN BOY, directed by Rouben Mamoulian for Columbia Pictures, and based on the play by Clifford Odets. It starred William Holden (his film debut in a leading role - he had appeared uncredited in two other pictures) alongside Barbara Stanwick. Your plot description was slightly off but only slightly. Holden played a talented violinist who wanted to box - did box. I would speculate that this movie appears on many a movie buff's Best 100 Films of All TIme. It certainly will be on mine when I get around to doing such a list.

Longford Lad,Yes Jackpot, Yes, Barbara Stanwick. one of my all time favourites, but wasn't his Mother the one that begged him not to box.? I missed half the film trying to keep dry. The Globe Cinema sometime in the fifties, wonder what happened to the girl, be in her eighties now if still with us. Thanks, Longford Lad for refreshing my memory. Kaga. |
