We had a little saying about the OLD FIVE players, I'm trying to remember?
MORGAN (gk) METCALF and MASON, ASTLEY ASHILL and TAYLOR, BILLY FRITH, CLARRIE BOURTON AND BILLY LAKE
I believe ALF WOOD took over from Morgan late thirties.

Just browsed "The Sport Buzz" which lists the "Top 15 players never to play for England"
Oh really? Over 140+ years of internationals, just 15 must be difficult to select!
I'm sure football followers on here would probably come up with varying lists
Anyway, their list includes the likes of Ron 'Chopper' Harris, Steve Bruce, Jimmy Case, Howard Kendall, Jimmy Greenhoff, Ken Wagstaff , Micky Hazard , Vince Hilaire , Tony Coton, plus . . .

My condolences go to his family and friends but I fail to see why he is deserving of a minutes silence as he was a major player in one of the worst times for this football club in its history, and there have been a few. I don't consider him as having been a 'bad guy', just incompetent.
I have seen a few comments about how great it was that he ousted Richardson, but the fact was he was there for many years with Richardson in control and did nothing to stop him ruining this club. He allowed Richardson to pretty much do as he pleased.
To give him his due, he did apparently lose a fair amount of money, and he kept on at the job even when it affected his health, but had he either done his job to start with and stood up to Richardson more, or resigned if he couldn't have the effect he wanted, it would never have come to that. |

Very sad to hear of the passing of Ray Pointer. Although he was arguably in the autumn of his career when he joined the Sky Blues, to me, a 10 year old City devotee, he was a hero. I remember 'the blond bomber' scoring a hat trick for City against Preston North End. This hat trick provoked the iconic headline in the 'Pink' that evening of 'Ray goes gay in City spree!' (City won 5-0)
RIP Ray Pointer. |

Sad indeed, Beesman - but as I recall it, City were after Colin Bell, aged 19/20 and full of potential, but failed to sign him and compromised with Bury on Ray Pointer, who was nearly 30 and past his prime
At least some good came of it, though, as Pointer moved on to Portsmouth, in a deal which saw Brian Lewis come to Highfield Road |

Just wondering if any older City fans remember a referee who took charge of several Sky Blues matches in the 1960's. His name was Maurice Fussey and he was an extremely enthusiastic individual. He would gallop down the pitch, keeping up with play, and then discover that he couldn't stop before he reached the goal line! His method of stopping was to continue towards the crowd behind the goal and basically run into the wall!
He provided a great source of entertainment to the crowd (sometimes better than the match itself!) and he was a great character compared with the robotic middlemen of today's modern game. |

I remember several of the referees from that era, especially as I became a qualified referee myself in 1969. And I certainly do remember Maurice Fussey. He was the referee when City player Liverpool in the First Division for the first time on Boxing Day 1967 on a snow-covered pitch. He certainly had his hands full that day against a very good Liverpool team and sent off Ian St John for decking Brian Lewis with a cowardly right hook.
Maurice Fussey wasn't the only referee to have an extrovert style. I remember Roger Kirkpatrick, a short, portly, bald individual whose 'knees-up' sprint always had the crowd in stitches.

I cannot believe that a time capsule, being buried near Coventry Railway Station and will not be opened for another 50 years has NO reference to CCFC!! (OR Coventry RFC for that matter) but contains information about Coventry Blaze and Wasps

I remember that game very well Mr D-Di. The incident with St John and Brian Lewis occurred in the centre circle and whilst it was an unforgivable act, Lewis did go down as if a sniper had hit him!!
