Thanks for that Philip. I missed the total eclipse of some years back as I was not in the UK at that time.
Now then, could you tell me where in the world will it appear as a total eclipse this time. Just old and knackered

The closest place to view the totality is the Faroe islands.

Flights and hotels are likely to be expensive and fully booked as the only alternative is Svalbard. |

Svalbard would be too far north for me. We went to Faroe Islands I think sometime in the early 50s. It was a trip organised by the Angling Times. "Experience of a lifetime" it was billed as. Trout in the clear streams and huge halibut in the sea??
We caught nothing, zilch, zero. We were booked in a "Hotel?" in a dump called Argir and it was dreadful. Prices off the map and only bottled beer at horrendous prices. Just old and knackered

Hi all
This Friday's solar eclipse starts around 8.30am, reaches maximum cover around 9.30, normal daylight returning by about 10am.
I keep reading fears being expressed for public safety regards the fact that this eclipse occurs during morning drive-time. Please be aware as daylight visibility reduces.
The official timings for Coventry Partial Solar Eclipse:
Begins: Fri, 20 Mar 2015, 08:26
Maximum: Fri, 20 Mar 2015, 09:31
Ends: Fri, 20 Mar 2015, 10:41
Duration: 2 hours, 15 minutes

I wonder if the birds will go silent like the last eclipse. Hope they don't fly into one another |

Hi all
As the time is just passing where we have our maximum eclipse cover, I am reminded of just how remarkable our sun is. After the sun & the moon, our next brightest regular object is the planet Venus, which because it orbits the sun inside of our earthly orbit, we only ever see Venus as a crescent. Just imagine how bright that would be if we were to see the whole of its illuminated disc.
I like Morgana's comment about the birds behaviour. It is a fact that most sighted animals have a much greater light level detection than we do. UK birds detect the lengthening days from January the 8th. There's a thought.
Have a good day all. |

I was just entering Bed'uth on my way to Cov about 9.30 when it suddenly went dark. Strangely as I entered Cov it got light again. Can anyone explain this strange phenomenon. |

Hi Wimero,
The maximum cover was at 9.30ish, but looking at our local cloud cover on satellite imagery, at that point in time Coventry had just become cloud free, whereas there was thin cloud further north.
I did notice our birds shutting shop as the light went down, but opening up again at around ten. They must feel cheated out of a good nights sleep, for such a short night, hey! |

It was cloudy here but it enabled me to take a photo. The surrounding clouds were a yellowish grey but there was an inner circle of blue grey shadow.

The thing that always gets me is not the light levels (I always expect it to go darker than it does), but the drop in temperature and the quietness. |

No it was today Wimero as my daughter has the same photo taken up Bedworth as Helen F in Warrington. I was out sitting in the garden from 8.45 till 9.45, took lots of photos from 9 till 9.35 but I could not see any crescent like them. |
