Hello, What are our growing up memories of breakfast cereals? The nature of my mum running her shops, sometimes meant that we had holidays in the wintertime. I remember a winter holiday 1953/4 in Weston super mare. The original producers Nabisco, were conducting trials of the serial Shreddies,, which I so enjoyed on holiday, but were not available in Coventry. I mention this as I've just enjoyed a bowl of them now. Growing up, wintertime was always porridge, whilst the warmer seasons were a mix of cereals throughout, mostly Cornflakes. We may have discussed this previously but you know that I enjoy food. PS, I've just had a phone call from a friend who isn't a forum member, but reads our posts. He said tell them about Cubs, breakfast cereal. I can't because I never had them. Can anyone expound on Cubs?

I was never a fan of cereal, though I found those mini mix variety packs very attractive. Something sweet and mushy first thing in the morning makes me shudder. Nobody pointed out that if you ate them quickly, they didn't have time to get mushy. My preferred winter breakfast was a crumpet but because they were only sold in the winter months, the rest of the year it was a bit of toast.

Has to be porridge with a big chunk of butter stirred in !!!!!

The cereal I have gone back to recently is Puffed Wheat. Not Sugar Puffs which are too sweet for me. I thought they had stopped doing them but I found Morrisons do their own. Was a favourite of mine as a child and again now ?? Years later.

I loved my dad's porridge but it took him ages to make it. Smooth as anything with brown sugar in the middle and milk around the edge of the plate. Only a couple of times a year though. As for cereals, I can't remember what they were called but they were large pillow shaped crispy wheat that never got too soggy. Shredded Wheat, maybe? Those small boxes were an extravagance, just for camping holidays. You could eat them from the box with milk.

I bought some AA batteries today. The label says they were packed in February 24 and they expire in March 33 !!! What else do we have with a nine year shelf life ?

Hello Mick, I endured two beautiful nurses, crawling all over my chest with an ultrasound probe for around forty minutes at Walsgrave last month. The specialist has to digest the results, but upon leaving & after thanking them, I told them that I was about to buy my three year senior railcard at a cost of £70. Shall I still go ahead & buy it.

Re breakfast: For many years breakfast was a crushed banana on honey on wholemeal toast. For maybe the past ten years it has been a daily bowl of homemade granola with a chopped banana, sloshed over with a 65ml bottle of Yakult*. *Other vanilla and lemon flavoured fermented skimmed milk drinks containing 20 billion friendly L. casei Shirota bacteria per 65ml are available. All this talk of porridge is putting me off this forum. I'm sure it's I bit irrational but, for some strange reason, I've always had a bit of an aversion to porridge. I'm struggling to decide if repulsion is too strong a word? I think I may have tried eating some at some point in order to slay the dragon, but it only served to reinforce my phobia. I do confess to having a similar situation with pasta and rice pudding. However, in their case it's comforting for me to be able to recognise the root cause. Namely school dinners at Woodlands school in the 1960's.

Private messaging: I do understand that forum messaging is the means for members to make contact in order to discuss sensitive matters or talk about other members behind their backs. But what happens if, say after 3 days, despite the intended recipient having been logged onto the forum more than once during that time, you get no response? How, without alerting every Tom, Dick and Harriet on the forum, do you go about alerting your victim that they need to check their forum mail? So, without taking the MICK, any thoughts as to how one could send a STRONG yet subtle message in order to have them check their forum mail? (Of course, there is always the possibility that they have checked their mail, read the PM and chosen to ignore it? )
