I see in the latest edition of ECHO that plans have been submitted to partially demolish and turn the somewhat picturesque former bakery on the corner of Spencer Avenue and Albany Road into student flats.

Link to Coventry Telegraph (21-05-2012): Former family bakery up for auction. I really hope whoever owns it next takes care of it - over 100 years of history within those walls. |

Does anyone remember the Kents' bakery in Well Street? I only came across it by accident in planning records. It was run by two women of that name. They wanted to rebuild and expand in 1954 but were refused permission as the street was to be blocked-off for the building of the Telegraph offices and print works.

I remember Gladdings. I loved their lemon curd buns, pineapple Swiss roll and Duchess biscuits. No other bakery was quite like them as they had unique products. Many happy memories.
They used to have a shop in Market Way. I used to go there on my lunch break for a prawn roll. Sadly one day I got food poisoning and was in bed for a week! Mindfulness

So many memories are evoked by the mention of these bakeries. What pleasure we got from their products.
How sad to think that now most of us make do with the inferior offerings of supermarkets and multi national companies. What happened! |

Hi Argon, I started work at Bobby Savage's as a van boy back in 61. Alec Guy was my uncle and went with him for a week on a trial run to see if I would like the job. Started the following week.
Your dad and mine (Harry Nicholson) were on the rounds at one time and old friends for many years. I remember Ted Eaton in the "fecky", Knocker Woodfield, Frank Smith, Dave Emery and a few others. I left and joined up with dad at Sutton's because Savage's only paid me £4 6s and Suttons offered me £4 15s to do the same job. Nicholson

'lo, Lollipop,
Think that you have confused me with someone else.
I worked at Armstrong Whitworth in '61, and my dad was running his own business, (not bakery). Nice to know that you managed to progress to a, then, reasonable wage of £4.15s Quite a good wage in those days but not making lots of dough ! |
