I especially liked the attention to detail of swopping the numbers 46 and 47 at the ends of the main Lants sign. But can you imagine in 100 years from now after this site has long gone, someone finding that transposed photo and trying to work out how it could possibly fit with a contemporary map? Big grin

On 21st Oct 2011 5:16pm, Adrian said: I think Lants pop was in Bond Street, just behind The Belgrade - or was that Corona.?
I got this old "LANTS" box about 18 moths ago now and as you can see, you guys were right, as they were based in Bond Street!!! The box itself is actually quite big and there's a small yellow label on the back of it, that says it contained: 1d Packets of Assorted Sweets!!! I don't know if the Art Gallery / History Centre would be interested in having the box to keep and preserve, along with all their other old Coventry related artefacts, but I'd be more than happy to donate it to them if they wanted it???

Wow, excellent find! It reminds me of the old tins of Robinsons crisps - which were also "made in Coventry" Thumbs up

I suspect the biscuits were shipped to Lant's by outside suppliers for distribution by them to pubs and clubs in the area.

I mentioned in another thread that I was an apprentice carpenter with Harold L Bates of Arbury Ave in Foleshill. He ran the business with his brother Sid. I was last in that area about 20 years ago and noticed that H L Bates & Co had gone. Where to and under what circumstances? Does anyone know? Harold always wore a bowler hat and was a nice guy unlike his brother Sid. Harold bought one of the first Standard Vanguards, what an amazing machine that was after the drab cars we had been used to. As I had a very expensive pastime I really needed more money than Bates could pay so I went where the money was, a miner at Newdigate colliery. There I was taught first aid so, as I then thought I knew everything, I applied for a job with the ambulance service. I was redirected to Henrietta St ambulance station in Birmingham and spent the next 30 years working from there. My apprenticeship wasn't entirely wasted as I still enjoy ruining pieces of wood. Norman.

Sorry, new to this forum and finding my way around. I have attached a pic here of a gent on an AJS motor cycle in what I believe is Lants back yard. My main interest was the old 1927 350 side valve AJS motor cycle, it has a 1927 Berkshire reg. no. There is an inscription on the back with just a date, 1929. In the picture you can see the back of an old lorry loaded with crates. Somewhere on the forum I saw pic. that had several of these old lorries featured. I could date those if I knew the reg. no's. I thought you may be interested in the photo.
