Here's a list of the top employers in the city from 1976 to 2007, which clearly demonstrates the decline in manufacturing:

Hi Morgana, Quinton Road was really industrious, Rolls Royce, Coventry Climax and Cornercroft Engineering. Did Pistons Ltd supply any particular engine maker? Mick Strong

Hi Mick Strong, yes Pistons was opposite Rolls Royce near enough, here is a link I've just found for you. I can see another manufacturer we have lost here in Coventry to somewhere else. Funny how last year I phoned South Wales and asked them if Mr G & A Parsons who used to own Pistons Ltd, two brothers in Coventry, was the same Pistons Ltd, just to say hello to them both if they were still alive as they were elderly back then, as they both had offices close to our office, they told me no it was not the same one but seems it was by this link. Most of the addresses I used to file and tallies typed for packing used to have UK addresses.
Another company which I have said prior on here I used to work for as their typist was City Electrical Factors under the arches Shakleton Road still exists I have noticed vans with Bayton Road address now too, so we still have that company still here. |

Hi Morgana, did Pistons Ltd, supply direct to engine builders or via distributors? My company currently buys pistons from Cosworth. Mick Strong

That I wouldn't know Mick Strong as I never took much notice at the time what addresses the tallies were addressed to, I just typed the labels for the packing department when they didn't have time to write them if they were very busy. |

Hi Mick. The Winfrey Building was part of the Butts Tech where the electronic courses took place. I had several years of evening classes there and although the building was a bit tatty the teaching was excellent. I don't know whether it was named after a company or not. |

Hi all,
I am new to this forum, and am currently researching Coventry, in particular its rich industrial history. I am an architecture student at the University of Nottingham, and have decided to base my thesis on Coventry. It will be my duty to find and solve a problem with the city, with the solution being in the form of a proposed new architecture that is placed in a significant area of the city.
I need to understand why such a beautiful city has lost all of its industry, from the watch makers that came before the bicycle manufacturers, and the Daimler manufacturers, right through to the fabrics produced by Cash's.
Why has Coventry lost its mojo and how can it be reignited in such a time of economic hardship and high unemployment?
Any help and information would be hugely appreciated.
Many thanks,
Amar |
