Sorry about the quality but I thought it would be of interest. It was pasted on the reverse of a very fancy picture frame from 1889.

Yes, it is interesting, Harrier - thanks for posting it Thumbs up Haven't been able to locate "Langton Terrace, Foleshill", although I believe the label says "near St Mark's Church" - perhaps you can confirm this from the original? Goddard's newsagent in Spon Street was "Charles H Goddard" - coincidence or one and the same?

Hi Harrier and Midland Red, I agree that is interesting Harrier, thanks for scanning it. Did a very quick bit of looking:- in the 1881 census Charles H. Goddard (born about 1865/ 16 in 1881) is registered at 10 Spon Street, Coventry as a cabinet maker. In 1891 he is registered at 4 Langton Terrace (again as a cabinet maker) with his wife Kate and son William. In 1911 Charles Herbert Goddard is registered at 10 Spon Street again, this time as a newsagent (so I think you're 100% right Midland Red there is a connection). 10 Spon street later became 'Goddard News'. Thumbs up

Looking at the 1914 traffic plan on this site, the groups of houses on the Stoney Stanton Road are labelled with terrace names (Alma Terrace, Milton Terrace etc.). The first block of houses on the site of the Walk-In Centre is near St Marks and does not have a name, this could have been Langton Terrace. Peter.

In articles in the Telegraph Langton Terrace is sometimes mentioned as in Great Heath and also Old Foleshill Road.

I know this is an old post, but I've been searching around, and Charles H. Goddard was my great-great-grandfather. The newsagent, from what I've been told, was in the family for quite a few generations. I know Herbert Goddard is mentioned elsewhere on this forum, that was Uncle Herbert to my grandfather, who was running it when he visited during WWII. This is very cool for me to see. I should add, my great-grandfather, John Goddard, was also a cabinet maker and came to Canada. My grandfather didn't work in carpentry, but his dad certainly passed down a lot of those skills.

Hi ehessbee, welcome to the forum Wave There are a lot of images of your great-great-grandfather's shop in Spon Street and it's one of the few old buildings that still exists. A much later colour photo with a relative here From 1978

Thank you for those! That relative in the colour photo is definitely my grandfather's uncle. He looks just like family.
