On an earlier post under this topic I mentioned a receipt I had for an engagement ring and it had a twopenny stamp affixed to it. I also remember having a stamp also on my birth certificate. The point being, what was the purpose of the stamp? Wave

As far as I know, it is to make it official. Mine has a 1 penny stamp on it which has also been stamped and signed over. I believe it has now been replaced by a stamped seal, which can be a flat ink seal or a raised indented seal. Thumbs up

Hi Dreamtime, apparently the stamp on receipts went out in about 1970. They had to be signed over to make your receipt legal. Also birth death and marriage. They used 1d and 2d stamps which had "revenue" written on them. Forgot about them till you mentioned, everybody used to put them on the receipt when you bought a car. Wave

Does anyone know the location? I know they were at 14-15 Broadgate, there is a 13 near the Royal Vaults but I can't spot Flinns nearby in old pictures, nor do I know the number sequencing of old Broadgate! Did the demolition of '36 end their Broadgate days?

Number 13 was Allwoods in the photos I've seen. It even had the number painted on it. Other names - Whitfields; Elkington.

The fire insurance maps confirm that 14/15 were to the right (ie. south) of 13. Coventry Insurance map 5

Thanks, that's useful to know how Broadgate was numbered. Now I'll have to try and spot it on an old photo. I probably had it somewhere, I lost my download folder with about 900 assorted photos! (People, be careful cleaning your tablet storage).
