I am researching my ancestry and have discovered that a great uncle had a foundry in Spon Street - T. Trahern and Co of National Foundry. My dad remembers a chimney with TRAHERN in the brickwork from around the 1940s. Does anybody have more details. Question |

In the '1912-1913 Spennell's Annual Directory for Coventry & District' it lists "Trahern T. & Co., National Foundry, Spon St. (Tel. 31x)" as a brass foundry, aluminium foundry and also working in motor casting. |

Number 146 was on the north side of Spon Street. 147 was the Lamb and Flag. Connected to that to the west was a conduit (public water source). To the west of that was a little road which led to a collection of small (2 or 3 storey) factory buildings. 146 was in front of those buildings.
Spon Street from Britain From Above.
By pure coincidence the blue tag with Spon Street on it is pinned to number 146. You will need to join/log in to zoom into the buildings.

The link takes you to Fourtoes, a great site about wet plate photography. The second picture on the page shows a plate where 146 is directly to the left of the scene. Then the roadway, the conduit and the Lamb and Flag. I'm not sure that the building in that photo is the same as in the aerial view (I think that it's smaller and it's definitely earlier) but it's the only street view of that area that I know of. There are others of the street but the middle of Spon Street is a bit of a photographic desert. |

"The Chemical Age" journal volume 9 of 1923, has a list of recent wills which includes Thomas Trahern, proprietor of the Aluminium Castings Foundry, Coventry.
A further search on Google Books, appears to show the value of the estate was £5,163. |
