The photograph seems to be taken from what is now Kenpas Highway looking south-east to the railway bridge (with no Kenpas Highway yet constructed beyond) - the garage to the left is Green Lane Garage, with Beanfield Avenue to the right from the signpost - quite what the signpost says is a mystery to me (perhaps it's "Garage" left and "Beanfield Avenue" right!) as Green Lane itself is just beyond the garage Oh my

You'll notice too that the bridge in the picture doesn't align with the Highway and had to be rebuilt later in a slightly different position. Smile

I would suggest that it could have been Elliots garage, Queen Mary's Rd. which was opposite the convent on the corner of Foleshill Rd and Queen Mary's Rd next to the Efficiency hairdressing salon.

I'm sure this photo was taken outside the nun's manse in Queen Mary's Road and the Foleshill Road junction. Opposite the manse was Elliots garage which had three pumps. I lived in that area from 1940 until 1952 and these pumps were hand operated.

I believe that Mr Elliot the proprietor had been a Manx T.T. rider in his younger years.

According to 'Tile Hill Kid''s site, the petrol station opposite St. James's Church was 'Hudson's', the proprietor was Eric Hudson. I couldn't find a photograph of it though.

On 24th Nov 2012 5:26pm, Vtopian said: I had an idea that the garage on the Binley Road was Mortons, but I couldn't be sure; thanks for that. While we're posting images of our Humbers, here's my late father's Hawk Estate - he was a member of PVHCC also.
Here's a Coventry Garage advertisement from 1955 Thumbs up and one from 1956

Just wondering what the business was on the left. It looks like it could be a Garage of some sorts. I checked in the 1940 Telephone Directory and there appears to have been 'Warwickshire Tyre and Car Sales Ltd' in Windsor Street. Windsor Street

This advert first appears in 1947 - before this date they seemed only to advertise as Vauxhall distributors Thumbs up It seems to have ended around 1955/56 as far as I can see
