Liked the shot too. These workshops were great places, full of character, oil and old machines. Hard to find one now. Had my two Humber engines rebored years ago, one in a place very much like this one, albeit in Scotland. BTW, liked the Humber Hawk Estate photo above. Very clean. Looks a circa 1960 model. Hugh

I used Midland Cylinder regular, very helpful for headsets, or if you are unfortunate enough to break a ring on reassembly they would soon find a replacement. Wasn't their place right down the bottom of Leicester Causeway? I seem to think the one in the pic is Coventry Boring and Metalling then again maybe not.

When I zoomed in on the link just now, the advertising board starts with 'Midland' I think. There is a little shop to the right as well, wonder what that would have been. |

Hi, the address is correct for Midland Cylinder Rebores. It was just down from the Hearsall Common. I once carried a crankshaft from Eastcotes down to there only to be told it was scrap and then carried it back again. Believe it or not, me dad filed that crankshaft journal "round" again and my brother made me a new big-end bearing for it at his works (Sandy Lane Garage, yes, the bus depot). My little Standard 8 went on for another 20,000 miles before I sold it. £15. I used Midland Cylinder a lot in those days. |

1963 with column-mounted gear stick and overdrive; I kept it in the Stondon motor museum (www.motor-museum.co.uk) until recently, and then it went to a Humber lover down on the south coast.ManFromVtopia

When the ring road was built, the line of it went along the side of Blamire's garage, which was retained.
The garage remained until about the mid-1980's, and the site is now occupied by an office building called Kings Chambers. |

Thanks for that splendid piece of nostalgia, I have memories of both depots and playing in the rear yard at Little Park St in the vehicles, and living at the Old Smithy Garage on London Rd.

My brother-in-law Len Brearton was manager of Newsome's Garage in Walsgrave opposite the Clifford Bridge Rd junction during the late 50s and early 60s. He gave me a part-time evening job on the petrol pumps. I bought a new Standard Vanguard from there, bench front seat, steering column gear shift with overdrive plus a strong thirst for petrol. I later traded that for a Minx Easy drive. As Sam Newsome also owned the Hippodrome we could occasionally get in backstage and met several performers. Les |
