Bob died quite a while back IIRC, I'm not sure about Bill, but I doubt he's still with us. |

And a very nice photo it is too Mike. Thank you for taking it and also for posting it on the internet. The Herald is one of my favourite cars of all time, that one is an original 948cc model if I'm not mistaken?
And welcome to the forum as well Mike

Are you sure you don't mean the early 90's? The reason I say this is because I bought my first new car from this garage in 1989, it was a Metro City 1000.
I had nearly forgotten about this, I asked my brother about the demolition and he said we only removed the front part which was the showroom etc. Wasn't it called Quicks after that?

I'm sure in the early '70's I brought spares for my Herald from Henly's, their workshop & parts was somewhere in Tile Hill. Showroom was on the on the roundabout opp the Stivichall Arms. More I think about this I remember our neirbour had a 2000, and was always moaning about Henlys.
They also were Jag & Rover dealers.
My heritage certificate (for a TR6) only gives the dealer name and not the actual garage destination of which they were two in neirbouring towns.
Best bet is a heritage cert and a trip to Warwick Record Office as already mentioned. I visited it about 20 yrs ago for a similar purpose. You should also find the first owner from the record office. |

Hi Dillotford. I worked for Henleys in the early seventies and the service & parts departments were indeed based in Tile Hill, Jobs Lane to be exact.
The site was on the corner of Jobs Lane and Broad Lane and, like so many garages, is now a small housing estate.
Jaguar Rover and Standard Triumph dealers. Henlys bought the dealership from the S H Newsome family I believe.

CovKid thanks for renewing my memory, I think I'm too young to remember Newsomes!
For the initial enquiry, it looks like Warwick have a full set of records:
WARWICKSHIRE
Warwickshire Record Office, Priory Park, Cape Rd, Warwick, CV34 4JS (01926 738969)
Open Tuesday to Saturday (BUT closed Tuesday to Friday in first full week of every month commencing on the Monday)

Does anyone remember Cheylesmore Garage, Nod Rise? This was a sister garage to the Chrysler/Peugeot dealer in Daventry Road.
I worked at the Nod Rise garage in the seventies when they were Austin dealers and at that time owned by the Monsell family.
The ownership moved on to Company Developments and through various franchises including Fiat, Aston Martin, Alfa Romeo and BMW before it closed and the site developed into flats!

I remember Cheylesmore Garage very well covkid as it was on my cycle ride home from school - Woodlands back to Allesley Park (under the subway under Dunchurch Highway).
They always used to have the back-page ad's in the Sky Blues programmes.
Here's as I remember it as a Beemer garage - which includes a super rare white BMW M1 - one of only about 450 built.
The Vale pub is just to the right of the shot - over the road and opposite that phone box on the middle-right edge.

Thanks for this NeilsYard. This was after my time and I think about 1986? I see the 635 racing car in the showroom entered by the garage in the touring car championship. The M1 was the personal possession of the owner's son, Tim Wilson and remains super rare!
You mention the Vale pub, I enjoyed a few lunchtime cheese & ham toasties over a pint - happy days. |

My sister flew from Baginton for many years, still does from time to time even though she is now in her mid seventies! She therefore knew Percy Blamire very well and introduced me to him when I wanted to buy my first car. He sold me a "cut and shut" Morris mini. I was well and truly ripped off!! |

I remember your father and you Paul! I called in at Ray's house in Bell Green some years ago when I returned to the UK, had a bit of a chat with him and spent an enjoyable 2 hours in his company.

Cheylesmore Garage. I had to visit there when I had a BMW in the 80's. Not a very convenient position and I understand they lost the franchise because they would not move and build a new showroom, so the Sytner BMW franchise is now on Holyhead Road opposite the old Alvis works.
Since this is the Triumph thread I would add that my first car was a 1967 Triumph 1300. |

Yes, my sister bought one in 1952 exactly like the one in the advert, and yes, for a short time, one channel, if I remember correctly the screen was about 9 inches square.
Annewiggy, I find that amazing, this forum does turn up some wonderful bits of info - thanks. |
