I worked at the Albion drop forging Endemere Road off Lockhurst Lane 1955 to 1964. I think the confusion is because there was a Brett's next to the drop near the railway bridge. I seem to remember it was where the drawings were made. Over the bridge was the Black Pad. Hope this helps Thumbs up

Only just come across this item. I also worked at Albion Drop Forgings till they shut down. I worked with Gil as his hammer driver and also worked with Fred after Gil went to America. I hope you two are still keeping well. John

My dad worked at Albion Drop late 50s and 60s. I used to take him some pieces when he worked a double shift. Everyone was on piecework so worked like madmen, a truly hellish place. Accidents were common, my dad lost the fingers of his right hand there.

My lasting memory of Bretts is of when I used to go to a wholesalers in Stoney Stanton Road, I believe it was Lennons and they had crockery in display cabinets. Every time the press stamped all of the crockery rattled.

My husband was doing an audit, can't remember if it was at Bretts or next door but he said all his papers bounced on the desk every time they thumped. He never knew if they put him at the worst desk so he wouldn't stay too long!

My old gran lived in George St directly at the back of St Marks school. I remember when we visited her the house used to shake when Bretts was working.

My grandad worked for Brett's Stamping Works. His name was Daniel Barr and he lived in Bell Green. He never owned a car but he did have a horse and cart that he rode around in. Once when my mum and I were sitting on a bus in the city centre he spotted us and rapped on the window, demanding that we get off so that he could give us a ride home. My mum was mad and embarrassed but I thought it was great. That would have been in the mid/late 50's.

Brett's Patent Lifter Co Ltd was an early spin off from Brett's Stampings as far back as 1898. Brett's Stamping Co was formed by Edward Samuel Brett and went public in 1897. Bernard Brett, his son, set up Brett's Patent Lifter Co the following year. Brett's Stampings went through various mergers until it was finally taken over by Williams Holdings. Brett's Patent Lifter Co continued with Ernest Goalby as Managing Director until 1959 when it was sold to B & S Massey Ltd of Openshaw in Manchester. Massey Forging Ltd is still going to this day, making drop hammers and trimming presses!

Having a clear out and found this promotional ashtray. If there is anyone who would like to have it I can send for the cost of postage. If no one wants it then it will go to the charity shop.
