Barbers, Hairdressers and other personal grooming

Don't know if this is the right thread for memories of a Barbers shop. [moved to a new topic - mod] Well it wasn't exactly a shop to be honest but in the late forties and early fifties we were dragged off to a Barber in Addison Road, well actually in the entry a few doors down at the Kipling Road end. And his shop was a actually a large wooden shed, which I think he opened up around 4pm on Thursdays and Fridays after his shift at the Jag and also on Saturday mornings. I reckon it cost about 2 Bob then or less for kids, a bit different from today eh. Even now I've never liked getting my hair trimmed since those days, and it still keeps growing now !

It was Laurence Day on Walsgrave Road that I would be given a couple of bob to visit instead of taking the school bus from Briton Road home to the Wyken Pippin. I recall his iron grip on one's head as he manipulated it to a convenient position and the sharpness with the which the comb and scissors rhythmically bounced off of my head. At some point during the cut he would pass over to his wife who would complete the short back and sides with an electric clipper.
