Dream, I can remember both our family Co-op number and my Nan's too. Still shop at the Co-op today. Wonder if those old numbers in Coventry still exist? |

The Co-op!! this brings back memories. My mum used to shop in the Prior Deram Walk shop in Canley. As a little one, I thought that the shop was massive, with a counter around 3 sides and a big square in the middle. I'm pretty sure there was a butchers and greengrocers connected or next door to the cafe that was at the end of the row of shops and next to the library?
As I recall, there were two chemists' shops there, the Co-op, and Tidball and Soper. There was also a Co-op chemist next door to Pearks "the cigar-**** shop" near the Crem. |

My Nan was an avid customer of the Co-op all her life. She was very enthusiastic once when they had a "double-divi" week.
When she passed on, the Co-op did all the funeral stuff! |

Another memory about the Co-op.
Did anyone else have the Co-op insurance man call weekly, collect the money and write up your card?
Ours in Canley was called Jack Sampson.

The Co-op man used to come to collect the money on a Saturday morning. One day, when I was around four or five, he saw me kicking a football around the back yard, and had a quiet chat to my mother. The result was a photoshoot, wearing my nice shiny new Clark's school shoes and kicking the ball. A short time later, I was coming home on the No 4 bus towards the Forum, and there I saw myself - the featured soccer star on a huge poster for Clark's! It was up there for quite a while in the early 1950s - I wonder if anyone remembers it!

Yes Mick, I'm pretty sure I remember Jack Sampson, he was a regular caller to our house too. At the time we lived in Cromwell Lane and I have a feeling he lived just off Torrington Avenue? |

Not my mum but my nan; it always amazed me what they were for, and yes, I can still picture them, quite dark red and blue hues. |

I remember the milk checks and the little tin my mum kept them in. When we moved to our new house in Coundon in 59 or 60 we had a little cupboard in the wall by the front door where the milkman would deposit our bottles. We, too, had one of each but I cannot remember why. |

Thanks MR. I have been trying to work out when my father in law was working there and I have a feeling he was there from the start. Always on the Gents Outfitters floor. |

Dream, I was in the Co-op mens' department with Mr Roberts in the vacations from Bristol during the summers, Christmas and I think Easter vacations. As you say he was a very nice person. Mostly the staff with him were ladies but I also worked on the first floor tailoring and school uniforms, and would occasionally be sent downstairs when they were busy. The boss in my time there was a Mr Dunford who was a keen bowls player, and a bigger, taller man upstairs was a Mr Brown.
