Likerealm Builder had yard in Coventry based in Napton did a lot of work in Coventry any one remember them

The yard is still there, not sure what it is used for now.

Didn't Garlicks have a site in Silverton Road, Paradise? I recall my grandparents who lived in Silverton Road telling me that a row of houses were bombed and Garlicks used to store their vehicles on the site in the 50s

The 1942 Telephone Directory shows them to be in Crabmill Lane

F. Hocking & Sons had their offices and yard on Ball Hill. They built the Norton Hill Estate at Walsgrave, The electrical installation was done by Storr & Townsend of Jubilee Crescent, Radford. W.O. Baker the Coventry plumbers also built houses on the Potters Green and Ernsford Grange estates. All of the above was in the 50s and early 60s.

During the years 1951-53, I lived in Allesley and was on summer leave from a Merchant Navy Training School. Looked for a summer job on a building site. James and Edwards were building a row of shops in Allesley village opposite the Post Office. Saw Mr. Edwards, I think it was, and he gave me a job as a general labourer, my first duty was to start up the machines in the morning - plus shovelling the aggregate into the concrete skips once they were going. Saw the foreman on the first day, who concluded his lecture with the words "don`t ever smoke these" (packet of Woodbines waived under my nose accompanied by a bout of hacking coughing). After a week or so, I was put with a couple of Irish chippies who were doing the first floor shuttering. They put me up to it. Irish bloke "How much is he paying you?" Me "One shilling an hour" (seem to remember that was the rate) Irish bloke "Well you are a chippie now, he should be paying you more for this job, ask him for a rise when you get your pay on Friday" I duly asked for a rise and got an extra three pence per hour

My wife has just told me that Youell's owned the parade of shops in Ash Green where she had her hairdressing salon in the late 60's.

In the early 70s I was working for Deeleys on a site bounded by Harnall Lane and Adelaide Street, opposite was a site run by the same Mr Hall. An old topic I know, but can I add George Storer (1863-1943) to the list of Coventry builders. He started in the 1880's, and the family were still into housing up to the 1960's. A daughter married into the Anelay family, also builders in the town. Being distantly related, I'm writing up the family history. (Advert, Coventry Herald 28 Sep 1855, Page 1)

Hi Winters63Moon, welcome to the forum No such thing as an old topic here It's the advantage of a forum over FB. I bet that timeframe was very interesting for people in the building trade with property shooting up all over. How many generations of George Storer were there from 1855 (already established) to 1943? I take it there was yet another generation because the advert mentions 'Jun' short for junior?
