That gearbox fault sounds like a Triumph Herald gearbox. There was a nylon washer or bush at the base of the gear lever and when it became a bit worn the gear change would become more and more sloppy and it was harder to find each gear.

I'm told this is Toll Bar garage near todays' island........... It got busier!
