From memory, the Rex Market was roughly where Smithford Way is now, I can remember playing in the burnt out shell of Hogarths, it was more or less roughly opposite the Gas Showrooms

Unable to recall the name but I often visited a shop in Well St that sold everything for the outdoors. Tents, hiking boots, portable cookers, everything was there. Later the top floor of the Gas Showrooms was used for selling similar goods. My wife lost her wedding ring on the beach at Gt Yarmouth so on return to Coventry we visited Ratners to buy a replacement. Shortly after Ratner himself said that a lot of stuff they sold was rubbish. Later that ring was stolen by a burglar who visited us. Les |

Yup! That's the shop and what a sorry sight it is. In my younger days I did a lot of camping and walking, possibly spent as much time on Dartmoor as the inmates did. A friend of mine Chris Dunn worked at Lynes and obtained for me a few staff discounts, very handy for a hard up student. If Chris is reading this it would be nice to get in touch again. Les |

Yes, I remember Provi and Mutual cheques, mum used to have them. There were only certain shops you could use them in. Probably that's why most of my clothes came from Hogarths in Corporation Street.

Hogarth's had a shoe shop in town as well, didn't they? I can remember going in there as a kid - and the reason mainly that I remember it was the X-ray machine! (They wouldn't allow those today, with Elf and Safety, would they?

Just found a photo of Weston Street and my husband remembers the man who ran the corner shop with his wife, the man's name was Arthur Cooper and he used to work at Unbrako in the stores at Northey Road, he used to sell his sweets and cigarettes at the factory and he was always sucking 'Nuttall's Minto's'! I can just about decipher 'A. Cooper' on the sign.
Just wondered whether anyone remembers the shop.

I am trying to remember the location (and the name) of a shop that I used to frequent in the late 1950's /early 60's that sold electronic components for us enthusiasts who used to dabble in home-made short-wave radios and other electronics. I think is was in Gosford street and sold not only new products, but ex-service radio gear and components. Can anyone remember it?
I recall there being two such radio component shops. There was Electronic Services down Gosford Street; when it was demolished to make way for the ring road, it moved to City Arcade. It was run by two brothers named Barton, one of whom had a son at KHVIII.
The other shop was in Much Park Street. It was called REP (Radio Experimental Products). I guess it just went out of business. |

I remember it as moving to the temporary shops in the High Street circa 1969 when Much Park Street was being demolished. Bought a TV aerial from there. Was eventually taken over by Tandy which became Maplins.
